I don't know. I don't know if it's genuine, or damage control. It's the kind of thing you'd do if you were sincere, OR if you had a publicist smart about damage control, so who knows?

He was checked-out by a doctor first and then monitored by a cop. The guy had five drinks to reach .12 (according to the breathalyzer) and although he admitted he was impaired and shouldn't drive, he PASSED the field sobriety test (head back, fingers-to-nose... walk a straight line bit). The guy wasn't beligerent or obnoxious or even visibly drunk. He spoke clearly, no slurring... And when given a keyboard test on his laptop, the cop witnessed him hitting every key accurately.

Now, when I first heard about Mel's rampage, I figured he was stinkin' drunk... This was before I learned that his blood alcohol level was just .02 over what used to be the legal level in most states (most - like Nevada - are .08 now). So... watching this demonstration lead me to believe that Mel Gibson is indeed anti-Semitic. He wasn't plastered... He just 'went off' on the cop... probably after seeing that he wasn't going to get the "Hollywood Treatment." Shameful.

Just a very brief mention that Mel had been arrested for drink driving.

I have been watching Foxtel( satellite) and this story seems to be all over the American news/entertainment shows as big news about Mel being anti-Semitic and various people saying what they think about his comments to the police officers.

I find it interesting what different countries focus their news stories on, maybe we don't have as much celebrity news as you guys do??

    You reckon Debtee?

I saw Mels face on the front of both the Telgraph and Sydney Morning Hearld on Monday, and he also made the front page of the Telegraph on Tuesday or Wednesday. Inside there were quite a few pages dedicated to what he got up to at the weekend.

Mel was the main story on Sunday and Monday on pretty much all the main new buletins here in Sydney, and he's still making the news Yesterday the cover of MX had a picture of a sign in Malibu which said "Welcome to Melibu", which made me laugh.

Anyway, here are just a few of the reports from the Sydney Morning Herald over the past few days:

I give kudos to the cop who didn't let down his guard on this, as I assume that's what let this out. Usually, a star does get their way. I heard this morning that Mel was driven a few miles to his car and it was removed from impound outside of impound hours.

Try getting that service as a normal person arrested for a DUI.

I don't buy the newspapers so I wouldn't know about them.
Maybe the print media has run with it more??

    I don't know anymore! lol

I guess though TV has to prioritise some what with regards to how much time can be given to Mel, when you consider whats going on with Israel and Lebanon. Saying that, I saw two reports last night as he was formally charged yesterday, that would have been on Seven and Ten.

All I know is, I dont have foxtel and I'm sick to death of hearing about Mel Gibson, so I can only imagine how bad I would be if I had all those other channels.

According to one report I read, in addition to Gibson's DUI in the 80's, he was also stopped twice before for speeding on PCH - once for going about 65 (in a 45 mph zone), once for going about 75. No word on if he was tested for DUI, and I think he was let off on a warning both times. I don't think you or I would get off with a warning if we were stopped for doing 75 on PCH.

A little story. When I was about twenty years old I was going to a party at friends house. In which we were going to crash there. Everyone in the car with me was 21, I was one of the last people in my group to turn. We stopped to pick up some beer and alcohol. Now I'm driving the car, the underage person who can't drink is driving. Well I get pulled over by two cops who wanted to see our id's. Well they get a call because of fight that broke out at a bar, so I was let go.

All distractions while driving be it alcohol or anything else need to be dealt with too. I'll be just as ticked if one endangers me as motorist by sipping vodka or talking on thier phones and adjusting the radio.

The trouble with the other things you mention is: how do you prove it? With alcohol you can have a breath test, but how does a cop prove that "you were paying too much attention to your kids in the back seat?" Yes, it's dangerous, but how do you prove it in a court of law? At least with alcohol, there's an objective test.
