Rumors that Hannah was planning to become a nun were quashed by the family after initial mention in the media. Gibson is Roman Catholic and his wife is Anglican. Gibson never disapproved of her Anglican beliefs, saying that "true love knows no boundaries." He has also called her "my Rock of Gibraltar, only prettier." But he also holds to the Catholic doctrine of "Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus". When asked how this doctrine would affect his wife he said: “There is no salvation for those outside the Church, (and) I believe it. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. ... She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.†[12] <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Gibson" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M el_Gibson</a> I've also read a couple of other quotes from him about this.

I have a belief also that if you do not accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior you will not go to Heaven period. So everyday I live with people I love and care about knowing in my faith they will not be with me in the afterlife. Not something I expect others to understand or agree with. I believe what is currently happening with him and the post above are completely separate and a bit unfair to judge him upon. He has an illness and I don't agree with everything he says religion wise but as a Christian I will pray that he finds his way.

That's what I get for posting after 12 hours at work. I meant was you summed up a complex thought in simple terms and it looks a bit cruel on his part. I don't believe that was his intent. No offense intended Mele.

Please let me know at what point this quote is legitimate enough to believe. Mel quite clearly states that his wife prays and believes in God and Jesus ("that stuff"). Sounds like she is a Christian and that must be why she goes to church with her family. It looks like she and her husband have decided to raise their children as Catholics. She might choose to go to a Catholic church every week but still might not be a true "member". (cmpaley went through an extreme amount of work to become a Catholic.) To me it sounds like Mel believes that ONLY members of Roman Catholic religion are going to be saved. Being a Christian who believes in Jesus isn't enough. In the New Yorker article, the interviewer told him that he was Protestant and asked if he could be saved and Mel replied: "I told Gibson that I am a Protestant, and asked whether his pre-Vatican II world view disqualified me from eternal salvation. He paused. “There is no salvation for those outside the Church,†he said." (Then he goes on to talk about his wife as I posted above.) Obviously we all have our own interpretations of his comment about his wife but it wasn't my intent to start a religious debate. I first heard of these comments a couple of years ago (not on wikipedia) and have always remembered them. Here is a link to a re-print of the original article: <a href="http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/980753/posts" target="_blank">http://www.freerepublic.com/fo cus/f-chat/980753/posts</a> Of course, if you don't believe this re-print, you can do a search for "The Jesus War" which was the name of the original article. It appears that The New Yorker does not have complete archives after Feb 2005.
