Although Minnesota ranks 21st in population, we ranked 16th in number of immigrants during 2004. We rank first in the nation for total number of Somali immigrants. So of course now we have Somali gangs. We deal with it. By and large they just kill each other, which is probably fine with the people who would prefer they weren't here in the first place. I don't know why people find immigrant gangs so shocking. In the early 1900's there were large numbers of immigrant gangs in New York City. I guess they just aren't quite as scary when they're white guys. So we are no California, but we do have immigration and some of its attendant problems here in Minnesota. By and large they are peaceful folks – they are always a few rotten ones that spoil it for the rest. I think they deserve the chance to become Americans. Besides, we need the Somalis. Who else would run the registers at Wal-Mart??

I think that much anti-immigrant (legal and illegal) animus is racially driven, but I don't think it's the reason that most people are against illegal immigration. I'm against illegal immigration, I just believe that some solutions would work better than the enforcement-only approach favored by the anti-immigration (legal and illegal) side of the argument.
