Don't even try to tell me how the system I work in is being affected. You have no idea. "Everyone living OUTSIDE of California knows why life INSIDE of California sucks." Oh really? Educate us, then. "Proposition and Referendum has made it completely impossible to raise the tax revenue that any state needs to exist. You've done it to yourself... you deserve whatever you get." Where in hell does all this suddenly come from? Speaking for myself, I've been saying we need to raise taxes for quite some time now. However, given that we have one of the most porous borders known to man, if the state was able to close it and find a way for collected tax dollars to go towards services for the people who actually paid those taxes, we wouldn't need to raise them. Tell you what. Come work for the government out here for a while and then see if you still have the nerve to tell us we get what we deserve. You'll find you've embarrassed yourself. We're getting what we have here because people think we need to accommodate people who don't contribute and don't belong. Illegal aliens will bankrupt California yet.

You willing to pay for a hundred people you never met to live in your house, eat your food, use your utilities and increase your insurance rates, just off the top of my head, because you have a job and all hundred of them don't? And then still have to pay all your own expenses? Didn't think so.

Although we obviously wouldn’t have the number of legal/illegal immigrants that California would have, considering our population Minnesota has far more than its share of immigrants. And for who knows what reason, it has never been a big issue to us. Do we have problems with immigrants? Hell yes. One of our biggest crime problems right now seems to be with Somali gangs. We also have a considerable problem with gang members from Chicago and St. Louis moving to Minneapolis. Do I like it? Of course not. But we will figure out a way to handle it other than putting up a KEEP OUT sign at our state borders. Because that is the way we are.

Keep in mind that California has laws like prop 13 to keep endless tax increases from happening. It requires a 2/3 majority from voters to approve bond sales for instance. Property taxes can't always track a houses value. So income is restricted, but outlays are mushrooming. That is called being between a rock and a hard place. And since voters know that the bulk of monies raised will go to provide services to illegals, they're just saying "Hell no"

To tell you the truth, I don’t think we are terribly far away from equity already. But I don't see a big deal with accepting any others needed to make things better.
Originally Posted By jonvn "It requires a 2/3 majority from voters to approve bond sales for instance." That's new taxes that requires a 2/3 super-majority. Bonds can pass with a simple majority, which is why since prop13, every ballot has at least half a dozen bond measures on it. It's the only way to fund things now.
