But then, I haven't personally experienced the park with either of these changes so I guess I should reserve judgment until I do...

A very small hamster cage. That swings. And scares the pellets out of you.

Neither of these have been "officially" announced although the Mickey face thing will almost certainly happen. The Goofy thing will never happen and I'll take bets on that.

Yes, they have. We have official art work from Disney showing these changes. That doesn't mean that they can't change their minds, however, it's about official as it gets.

But that's all we have: artwork. I'm sure the imagineers come up with all sorts of ideas and present them in the form of artwork. These renderings were presented to cast members only, probably to get them excited and involved, and we are lucky enough to have people "sneak out" some images. But neither of these things have been officially announced. I agree with ChurroMonster that the MM redo will probably not happen and the Mickey face probably will.

Steve Davidson is a smart man and come up with another way to use the Mickey face in the World of Color show rather than add a permanent face to the Sun Wheel.

As for the Mullholland Madness, if they are gonna keep it I'd rather them leave it alone. It's an eyesore at Goofy's Sky Skool and Mullholland Madness. WDI should just save their money to fix up other areas of the park.

Then the problem you have seems to be with the Pier theme and not the ferris wheel itself. If the Sun Wheel makes you think of the Santa Monica Pier, then it is only doing its job of proper representation of the themed area that it is sitting in. If that's the case, you might as well remove California Screamin' while you're at it! As that would also be reminiscent of Santa Monica Pier...

I don't know how I feel about the MM head because it will be an important part of WoC.

But I also happen to love the look of the Sun Wheel as it is. It does kind of smybolize the whole 'fun in the california sun' motif that is the story of PP. And I don't understand how people can rip this ride as it is quite unique ... only two in the world but that's another story ...

As to the Goofy overlay on MM ... well, it can't possibly make it any worse. But putting the thing indoors, in the dark with some kewl effects like lights, trees etc that you might see on Mulholland Drive would have made more sense. I am still shocked they are keeping this thing.

BTW The Sun wheel is quite different from a generic carnival ferris wheel. If you ever visit the park and grow a pair, you should ride it. It's fun.

But it's true, this has little to do with a typical ferris wheel. Anyone who's actually seen the thing would know this.

I have always said they could have very EASILY made MM much better by simply enclosing it and adding some simple dark ride effects. But I read someplace that doing such a thing is really not practical, and the whole ride would have to be ripped down (or something close).

Still, it simply needs to be enclosed. Not making it worse is one thing, but spending a lot of money and NOT MAKING IT BETTER is just as bad.
