They know that they can get fired for saying them, especially to a coworker. But if you're careful you will hear this sort of verbiage when people feel they are in "safe" zone. For example, I once had a coworker who asked, after hours, why hispanics "live like pigs" (he knew I lived in Mexico City for several years).

I guess that a black shopper may misunderstand why we asked the question and think we did not trust them but what can the sales person do about that ? it's just what we were told to ask everyone.

They got in my face b/c I was looking at my notepad and not them and they thought I was racist. Luckily Kevin heard the argument, and came to my defense. (he is black) He explained to them how I was nervous, because this was truely my first table. You should of seen their faces after that. They were shocked that I was telling the truth. I never once wanted to come across racist I was truely just scared.
