Unless you're some kind of high powered businessman, I consider a need for a computer on a plane HIGHLY indulgent.

All three airlines you mention are in the same alliance, so you can earn and redeem miles interchangeably. You could fly on Continental, earn Delta miles for the flight, and then redeem them on Northwest. You want to make sure you milk your freeloading for all it's worth.

I was just wondering why he cannot do without his computer for fourteen or so hours and is thus buying more expensive tickets on another airline that DOES provide computer access, yet he is clearly saying money is an issue for this holiday. Sorry but the two things don't compute. Oh and sorry to talk about you as if you were not here, Mr. X. At this rate, your wife will develop a complex and will want to do what another Nipponese wife of a friend of mine does - leaves him at home in Tokyo to work while she goes north with the kids to visit her mother. I have heard that's a Japanese thing to do. If she insists, just tell her that's fine.....you will visit Florida on your own then!

Don't forget, I learned from the freeloading master!

Just because I said I'm not going to dump twenty-four thousand bucks on business class tickets doesn't mean I'm unwilling to splurge a bit here and there on a better quality product. What a silly thing to say! **I cannot believe you're willing to fly a more expensive airline just because you cnnot bear to be without your computer for twelve or so hours.** You're making a lot of assumptions. The need for a computer is for the benefit of all the other passengers, NOT for my use whatsoever. **You DO realize they have movies in the headrests in front of you these days, right?** Apparently NorthWest does not. Again, that'd be a bad thing for all my fellow passengers. I'm paying more money for THEIR sake, not my own. **Unless you're some kind of high powered businessman, I consider a need for a computer on a plane HIGHLY indulgent.** I'm not going to beat a dead horse with my reasoning yet again, but as SuperDry said any vacation could be considered indulgent and particularly many of the ones discussed here on LP. My "depression era" Grandparents hardly vacations at all their entire lifetimes, despite having the means to do so, because the idea was "over indulgent". And when they did take a trip once in a blue moon, it was in the family car, and not too far away.

I understand needing Mom to help out with the new baby, sure, but why doesn't Mom join the family and not vice-versa? And in many cases, the Dad stays home to work and DOES NOT SEE HIS BABY for several months after the birth! That just floors me.

"YOU BASTARD!!! YOU DID THIS TO ME!!! I HATE YOU!!! IT HURTS LIKE HELL!!! I AM NEVER LETTING NEAR ME AGAIN YOU PIG!!!!" ...sounds familiar to you during labor?

It seems that Mr X is doing exactly what one would hope for if one wanted to help restore health to the US airline industry: rather than shop by price alone, he's evaluated several available options, and in fact decided on the most expensive one based on that carrier offering a couple of in-flight amenities that are important to him and the others don't have. I don't think it's any coincidence that it's the one carrier of the three that's not been in bankruptcy court in the last decade. Mr X, here's some more advice: when you finally have enough miles on any of those three carriers and redeem them for a free flight, be sure to do so on Continental. The manifest won't identify you as a freeloader to the crew, so you'll have no chance of getting a Mr. or Ms. Crankypants that thinks you're not paying enough to be on their flight.
