Citibank though is generally well thought of and rated kind of middle of the pack (13 out of 21) by Consumer Reports. Maybe they just really dig volleyball players. ;-)

I said my son the bill collector had no problem registering complaints quite vigorously, but that I just didn't feel comfortable doing it. I was told that bill collectors were scum of the earth. But if anyone else does I will try to slice off their manhood with a dull rusty knife if I ever meet them in person. vbdad is in no danger though. He has expressed his thoughts reasonably and listened to counter-arguments. Something that I though most here would do but seemed not to. He also is bigger than me and a former hockey player. Bigger than me doesn't necessarily scare me. Former hockey player does! ;-)

My friend isn't schmuck out to steal from the kindly credit companies. She simply didn't make enough money to pay all her obligations. It came down to her mortgage, her kids' healthcare, car insurance, food or Discover Card (i believe she also went out on another card as well) ... she is a wonderful human being. Sometimes life isn't fair and it sucks. But I don't have sympathy for CC companies at all. They take advantage of things. Now, thanks to laws passed by the idiot in the White House, credit companies can suddenly raise your rate from say 9.9% to over 30% if something negative appears on your credit report ... even if your account is in good standing with the CC issuer. Sorry, Trippy, I understand you love your son and want to defend what he does. I also understand (now) that he isn't one of the low-lifes who spends his day in a cubicle mindlessly calling and harrassing people. But that doesn't change my opinion of the industry one iota. Good people have their lives ruined (literally) in many cases by credit companies. They take advantage of people much like the $5,000 'check' sent to VBDAD's daughter. I built up my credit starting in college, but today many kids are already thousands in debt when they start. There is no responsibility by the companies and the laws all favor them.

So what if the MK sucks bigtime? DAK is wonderful and improving all the time. Epcot is great and finally has a very bright future and quality leadership. The resorts are amazing. And there are all sorts of things from spas to golfing to water parks to great dining to enjoy. But many bathrooms really are dirty!
Originally Posted By RoadTrip <<Good people have their lives ruined (literally) in many cases by credit companies>> I'm sure that is true. It never pays though to paint with too broad a brush. Some credit companies act responsibly. Some don't. Some debtors act responsibly. Some don't. Some people bring on their problems themselves. Some don't. Some collectors abuse the process. Some don't. It is easy to resort to hyperbole on either side of the issue, but never correct to do so. All here with strong opinions should remember that. And that includes you, and that includes me. By the way... this is neither here or there, but I have never known of a debt being turned to collection if the debtor tried to work it out. Even if it is sending something minimal like $20 per month, if a person contacts the company and explains the situation it will be worked out. It is when people do not respond at all that accounts are turned to collection. Companies do not like doing that. The minute you turn something to collection you: 1) Piss off the customer. 2) Give away about 50% of the debt to the collection agency. They would prefer not to do either. So to a certain extent anyone with a debt turned to collection deserves it, because if they had made even a minimal effort to work it out with the creditor it would have never happened. Of course once it is turned to collection, people have far less negotiation power for partial payments and a far greater likelihood of harassment.

I've told her to call the company, explain her situation, and offer to pay an amount each month that she can afford to pay... even if it is considerably less than the requested minimum. She has never had an account turned for collection. In fact in a couple of cases the interest charges were discontinued and she was told all she needed to pay off was the principal. If you don't ignore the situation it can almost always be resolved.

So isn't meeting previously agreed upon minimum payments. Your Mother did neither (acting on YOUR advice, no less...how rich this irony!). So, without going so far as calling your own Mom a "low class schmuck", you have made it clear you don't consider her a "quality person". Your words, not mine. And yet you sit up there in your ivory tower and pass judgement on all those other "low class schmucks", and when I point out such obvious misstatements and bad assumptions as you've made, you suggest I leave the forums. Amazing.

If you get in credit trouble and you make an agreement that is acceptable to your creditor that is meeting your obligations. Totally ignoring the situation and letting it be turned to collection is not. I know this might be a little complex for you to understand, but if you ponder upon it a while I'm sure you will get it. Go away now, OK? You don't respect me enough to bother with me and I don't respect you enough to bother with you. Let's score it as a draw and call it a day. OK?

Originally Posted By Mr X **If you get in credit trouble and you make an agreement that is acceptable to your creditor that is meeting your obligations.** So the company gets less than was agreed upon, and that's "meeting your obligations"? No, it's not. You're wrong. Sure, the company is settling for less, most likely for the reason you yourself mentioned...that they'd lose MORE money by sending it to collections. That doesn't make it "okay" for people to get away with such irresponsibility. And you're a hypocrite anyway, because you made blanket statements about "low class shmucks" and now you're qualifying your comments left and right. **I know this might be a little complex for you to understand, but if you ponder upon it a while I'm sure you will get it.** I'm sure we could take a poll, but only one us of is the idiot/hypocrite here... And you exacerbate your ignorance by turning to snide comments about the person you are supposedly debating with. And then suggest the conversation end, before (of course) my rebuttal.
