But I have worked in the bicycle business for 30 years, and bicycle helmets are common now. Of course many people still don't wear them, but there isn't much stigma attached to them. Also, in many places, helmet use is mandatory for kids.

Originally Posted By SoThisIsLove This topic is bringing back some very, very tough memories for me, but, for the sake of education or just a general "be careful": One of our daughters was babysitting a neighbor's child. They were sledding on a gentle incline in our housing area, maybe 10' long total. Tons of neighbor kids were doing it, without incident. Again: a *very* gentle incline, and maybe (at most) 10' to slide. I don't think the most paranoid parent would've put a helmet on anyone that day. The little 5 year old girl, in a very freakish accident, bumped her head on some hard-packed snow. No problems. No crying. No nothing. After a while, our daughter took her back to her house for some lunch and a nap. The little girl became unusually groggy. My daughter called me. I told her to call the parents immediately and inform them (after I found out about the head bump). My daughter called the parents. They declined to come home. I called the parents (you know *that* feeling you get?)and insisted they come home and take their daughter to be examined. They did. It was an hour to the hospital (we were stationed overseas). She almost didn't make it. She had a subdural hematoma. Bottom line here guys: it doesn't matter if you are skiing, snow boarding, roller skating, walking in your home...sometimes we won't be wearing helmets in some of the most innocent situations. Just read up and know the signs of possible head injuries and follow your gut instincts. I still cannot think about this near tragedy without being in tears....take care, everyone. And my deepest sympathies to Liam Neeson, Lynn Redgrave, the kids, and everyone else in her family. What a lovely light that will no longer be shining. xoxo

This is not unexpected. Insiders felt yesterday, on learning they were flying Natasha in to Lenox Hill, that this meant her condition was hopeless and they were just finding a place to be together with her and to say good-bye. As one insider remarked:"Nobody goes to Lenox Hill who is really sick; if she’ d had a chance to live, they’d have found another great brain hospital!" This is all just utterly horrible to write!' www.wowowow.com/entertainment/liz-smith-natasha-richardson-life-support-lenox-hill-hospital-243237 It's very surreal and such a scary, sad story. My heart goes out to her family.

Several media outlets quoted unnamed sources close to her family as saying the actress was declared brain dead Tuesday. Richardson's loved ones and professional representatives, however, have not yet issued an official statement regarding Richardson's accident or condition. www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/2009/03/18/Smith_Richardson_taken_off_life_support/UPI-71421237406174/ Those that know more about the life support circumstances might be able to confirm this, but is it possible that she may not have passed yet? Either way, she HAS been taken off life support and none of the reports so far have been looking towards a recovery. It is possible though that she HAS passed away but the official confimation hasn't reached the surface yet. I won't ever be able to watch certain parts of Love Actually after all of this has happened. It seems to be terribly foreshadowing of what has taken place in real life for Liam Neeson. Such a sad case. =(
