And I'd have preferred a plain wood floor as opposed to the spider web design. It's supposed to look like an antebellum mansion. I don't imagine Scarlet O'Hara's daddy would have had a spider web design installed in Tara's foyer.

I've also just wondered how someone took the photo. Surely you shouldn't use flash photography anywhere in the mansion?

I simply asked the CM if I could wait until the foyer was empty and take a quick picture before letting other guests in. It only took a couple of seconds.

I agree with wonderingalice. I don't know about you being right all the time, but you are 100% dead-on (no pun intended) about this. I was going to post a message saying essentially the same thing.
What the heck? I will go ahead and vent. It is supposed to be a mansion that eventually became haunted. A wood floor shaped like a spider web looks more like something out of the neighborhood Halloween haunted house. What's next? Giant fake spiders? (Oh, I forgot, they already have those too!) Yes, I know that the Haunted Mansion has areas with ghoulish wallpaper, but that is in the "Corridor of Doors". The foyer itself has a flower-type design.

Bear with me here. To me, subtlety is the key. The ghoulish wallpaper in the "Corridor of Doors" works because you have to look closely to see it. It's kind of hidden. It gives the subtle message that the ghosts have slowly taken over. It's kind of like an episode of the Twilight Zone. On the surface, everything is normal. When you look closer, however, you come to the horrifying realization that things are not as they seem. This floor just screams out at you and says, "Hello! Here I am!" Doesn't work.

Before I go on, I need to tell you that I happen to hate carpet. Period. My house has very little. I would have removed it all but my wife protested. Having said that, I really like the idea of replacing the carpet with wood. If it were up to me, I would have just kept it to a simple wood floor design THAT MATCHED THE REST OF THE FOYER or made some kind of pattern that you would never notice unless you were looking. That is a Disney trademark. (Hidden Mickey's, anyone?)

As for the decision to go with wood instead of carpet, I am for it. Wood, laminate and tile are all low maintenance and excellent for heavy foot traffic. When you walk through a model home, you will notice that they usually have tile or wood in many parts of the house. Most restaurants have wood or tile floors. Malls and many of the stores inside them have hard-surface flooring. I could go on and on but the point is that Disney most-likely did it for maintenance reasons. Let's face it. It is just better. Why replace the carpet every five years when you can put in a wood floor and not replace it for a very long time?

Some of you are worried about slipping on the wet floor and I have thought about it too, but remember a few things: (1) I seriously doubt that Disneyland is going to wax the floor every night; (2) Anaheim doesn't get a lot of rain (10-12 inches annually); (3) How are you going to get mud on your shoes when most of Disneyland has cement walkways?; (4) You walk slowly into the foyer with other people around, making a slip less likely; (5) In today's day and age, certainly the Disney lawyers took the potential slip & fall lawsuits into account before they gave their blessing.

Bottom line. Replace the flooring with a rugged-looking dark wood that matches the rest of the foyer...and lose the spider web design.

For what it is worth, I am very good at being able to spot real wood vs. laminate/pergo. I will be in the park this coming Friday and Saturday. If no one has told us for sure by then, I will post another message letting everyone know what I think it is. Based on the picture, it looks like real wood. You can tell because with real wood, every piece is slightly different. With laminate, each piece is very similar.

(I really need to get a life!)
