I was probably somewhere in the middle of my group and looked at the floor because I knew about it. Because of the amount of people, it was hard for me (and I imagine anybody behind me) to discern that there was an actual web pattern. The floor is quickly obscured by folks, and just becomes more-so as the remaining people compress into the room. I probably would have chosen two darker shades of wood (to make the pattern less "contrasty") but I think it will be a non-issue to a very high percentage of guests.

One man's spderweb is another man's octagonal design and I feel that it works in the realm of foreshadowing. It's no more blatent than the seriously creepy gargoyles in the next room!

This has happened to the laminate floors by my desks, it leaves an unsightly mark.It would stand up to foot traffic well though. A laminate floor is a "floating" floor (not nailed down to the subfloor like hardwood would be) therefore a laminate floor would be easier to replace, but a laminate floor does not age as well as hardwood. For example you cannot sand down laminate and refinish it. Some of the better quality laminates have bevelled edges, sometimes you can tell if its laminate or hardwood by the edges of the "pieces" of wood. If it's vinyl it will be slightly more spongy and usually glossier. The walls don't appear to have an Oak grain but that could be the lighting, more of an Ash or Cypress? They could have used a "stain" that is more in the brown instead of red-brown tones but perhaps they want to draw attention to the floor? Does the new floor look like an Oak Grain in a "Cherry" style stain to you? If they did "age" it (a museum I went to once aged a floor by driving a "sky lift" over it many times) it would give a less slippery surface when wet.

I wasn't even paying attention to the foyer. The floor could have been purple and I probably wouldn't have noticed.
