I have often thought Star Tours would be great in 3d (though I will probably only see it once as it makes me sick). Star Tours (and the right Imgineers writing the story) can utilize this to great advantage, as long as they treat it as natural and not a gimmick.

    Sounds exactly like Mission Space.

It depends on the motions of the vehicle. The reasons it shouldn't be a problem on Star Tours is that the rider will always be at a fixed distance from the screen, looking at it at the same angle.

On Spider-man, the 3D screens are seen from a moving vantage point, but the motions of the vehicle is rather slow. Also, the screens on Spider-man are rather far away. From my (probably poor) interpretation of the Midway Mania concept art, the screens look to be much closer to the ride vehicle, which could possibly put an extra strain on the eyes. That in combination to any minor spinning would be enough to make those with weak stomachs get nauseated.

    Heh heh. I'm kidding.

The 1980's we were all rediscovering 3D, and rediscovering the tricks were a part of that.

Now, there's nothing to prove. Great effects are effects that don't FEEL like they're competing for attention with the story, and the very nature of this attraction begs for that sensation of illusion - that you're really jetting through the vastness of space.

If they can pull that off, in the manner Daannzzz suggested, it'll be brilliant, it will become more of a "ride" if the sideports are visible, more immersive. This is the Star Tours I wanted when it OPENED originally.

It's more like the STAR TREK experience that's been enjoyed in Vegas for years, but this will have the advantage of 2007 and the Disney touch, the Lucas touch.

We're in for a treat on this one.

I think the motion sickness factor is increased also by the fact that you're 'focusing' on a smaller section of the screens while trying to aim your targeting gun. Although 3-D imagery has vastly improved over the years, it's still not perfect when compared to natural 3-D vision in the real world. It's this 'confusion' in the brain with what your mind 'thinks' is happening vs. what is actually 'physically' happening. And sometimes, the brain just doesn't respond well to it! (And we all know what those results can lead too!)

Even if Star Tours was to include 3D and better simulation effects, it wouldn't come close to what's going on with the Spiderman attraction.

Now, try putting 3D screens and tech into Indy Jones or Dinosaur and then you're getting there. ;) (just kidding, don't EVEN go there Disney... I'm tired of looking at "screens" lately, truly. let's get back to animatronics, can we?)

I wouldn't exactly call it a "simulator" but yes, I agree.

In fact, I think Spiderman is in the top 3 greatest theme park attractions in the world, sometimes number one (it varies depending on what I've experienced most recently :p).

IF they can pull off a Star Tours that rivals Spidey though...whoa, how AWSOME would that be!!?? :)

I FINALLY have an excuse to make plans to go back to DisneyWorld!! :D

Also, when is it suppose to arrive? This year? 2009? What's the timeline?

Just seems odd to me people are arguing over something that might just be made up in someone's head out there. Don't get me wrong, speculation is what drives these boards lol, but maybe we are jumping the gun a little, that's all.

Sure it is!! It's a ahhh... Spider/getting thrown/getting blown up/falling and getting saved simulator!

    ;)

Yes, I certainly LOVE my Disney attractions, but wow... Spiderman just blows me away every time.

They know full well they can't have an attraction making masses of people sick again. Even on Crush's Coaster at WDSP there were initial reports of nausea on the coaster part because there was nothing to focus the eyes on, but WDI went in and fixed that so it doesn't happen. So, I trust that they won't make Star Tours any more nauseating that it already is, LOL!

He ok'd the last two Star Wars films and they were were crap. So why should I trust that this upgrade will be stellar just because he had something to do with it?

With that said, I agree that the 3D effects for this sound promising. Yes, the 3D thing is overused, but this is one instance where it makes complete sense. With the arrival of this Star Tours upgrade maybe they can remove some of the older and dated 3D movies from the parks.
