Even worse, I don't think Greedo so much misses as Han suddenly gets Dashell Parr like speed and *dodges* the laser. It's just poorly done.

Here's what I'm watching on: my 36" HDTV Widescreen Sony. I say that to show that while I have a decent size TV, it's not so huge that I'm being unrealistic in my expectations. I have my TV calibrated based on Lucas's own THX specifications. I use monster component cables for the best possible picture outside of hi-def HDMI. The Indiana Jones DVDs, The Lord of the Rings DVDs, and the Star Wars special edition DVDs look absolutely stunning on my TV.

As for the non-remastered, non-anamorphic original Star Wars, it's as bad as you might think. With a widescreen TV, while watching a non-anamorphic DVD, I have to use the zoom feature to make the picture fit properly. It loses significant resolution in the picture. The grain, which would be natural without zooming, is enlarged and seems distracting. Even without zooming in, the colors are surprisingly muted and almost washed out in some cases. The colors just don't pop off the screen the way they do in other discs. There are also moments of definite dirt and debris on the film source.

In fairness, these do look better than the original laserdiscs, which were the source for these DVDs. They look better than the VHS versions I've been hanging onto all these years. I suppose if you're watching these discs on a 27" 4:3 TV, you won't notice as much. But there's no way I'll be purchasing these discs. Even if they hadn't been spruced up perfectly a la Indiana Jones, if they had been anamorphic, I might have shelled out for them.

But now I'll wait for hopefully something better next year for the 30th anniversary release of the first film.

Oh, c'mon. Everyone needs to see this train wreck to believe it. I think my favorite part is the opening scene at Chewie's house with his son Lumpy, wife Mala, and father Itchy. 15 minutes of Wookie grunting - no subtitles. Good times, good times.
