What I said was that they were ashamed or guilty, because religion maligns sex in such an extreme way (depending on the faith). So in the case of Mormons, who topped the list, for the first twenty years of your life or so you are told nonstop that sex before marriage is evil. I don't just mean it's irresponsible or can lead to STDs or pregnancy or blah blah blah, I mean you are taught that it is evil and if you do it you will be in God's worst graces. That can't just magically go away when you say "I do." And you have to keep in mind, Mormons look to their leaders for guidance and rules on EVERYTHING. So young married couples are left confused or nervous - can they have oral sex (some Mormon leaders have said no). What about other activities? It's a bizarre culture where the leadership routinely invite themselves into your bedroom and you're left wondering what's okay and not okay. So at least in this case (and I suspect other conservative Christian religions) the attempt to morph sex into promiscuity is misguided at best.

The Shakers went so far as to label all sex sinful, and tried to increase their ranks through conversion only. Which explains why they died out. Great furniture, though.

Why else would the Catholic church (for example) insist that birth control, even within the confines of marriage, is a sin?
