Throw everything you know about "when it's a good time to visit" out the window. Passholders also don't feel compelled to experience as many attractions as day trippers, which means they are in the walkways and common areas and not in line/in shows/on rides. Disney also failed to adequately prepare its infrastructure for annual passholders, the biggest problem being that passholders generally have a lower vehicle occupancy when they visit. This means that passholders are more likely to drive to the park alone, causing a shortage of parking spots.

You've forgotten about the all important guest spending excluding ticket receipts. That's why Disney will do everything it can to attract overnight guests (build DCA, strengthen it to make it a full day experience, west coast cruises, etc) while appeasing locals with regular discounts and APs. Remember, if the locals don't go to DL they are going to Knotts, Magic Mountain, Universal, etc. Again, DLR does not exist in a bubble. "I don't understand the partial day ticket...how are they going to clear out people from the park at 3?" Maybe you can stay, but your ticket won't work for getting on the attractions.

Disney would be making the same or even more money, the smaller crowds would have a better time, and the parks would be in much better shape. Now, on a personal note I of course wouldn't be wild about paying double for an AP, especially since I live in Texas and only get out there a few days each year. But I do acknowledge that there's a problem, and there are simply way too many people trying to enjoy themselves at Disney parks.

I hate DL now that its virtually wall to wall people year round. I haven't been back in two years and probably won't bother to until they finish the DCA additions.

Disneyland had ups and downs just like any other theme park did, however as soon as they perfected the AP program, Disneyland virtually has no ups and downs. The attendance rate stays pretty consistent year round which non of the other parks can even hope to attain. Because of that they know that Joe is going to the park five times this year, each time he uses his deluxe pass to buy from the golden horseshoe, so we raise the price by .30 and make our money off of Joe. They track everything we do with our cards and they know how AP holders tick. And over crowding in perspective is not really that bad. Think about it, on the busiest days (I am an all day tripper though) I get on 14-15 rides. The rides with the longest wait times in DL is Splash and Space. Everything else hovers around 25-45 min. Personally the best day to go is Friday. All day, during the day the park is not that crowded so you can hit all the big stuff, then when the AP holders start appearing at around 3-4PM you head over to DCA and ride stuff over there and then come back to DL to stake your spot for the fireworks and fantasmic at 8:30. I also get fastpasses for everything that offers it so at night I can bypass all you AP holders!

Although, I still think a pass that did all that would be a lot more than $1,000 a year. I still not sure how I feel about making a super expensive pass that only some people could afford, that lets you get a lot more perks than everyone else. Discounts is one thing, but no AP at DLR now lets you get Unlimited Fastpasses or front of the line passes... It sounds cool and I might be able to afford a pass like that if I chose to spend the money on it... But would it be fair? I don't think we really need to create a "class system" in the park where the rich get stuff better than everyone else... It's already like that too many other places and in life in general. =)

But at DL you get to ride a LOT of rides and shows and stuff for the price. If they charged you $14 just for one ride on PoTC... Hm... Let's not give them any ideas.
