Full disclosure time. As many World Events posters know, I'm a child support enforcement attorney for a rather large county in California. That makes me a mandatory reporter as well. Moreover, I have no children. But at 48, almost 49 years of age, I've learned a few things.

I've read through this entire thread. Despite Kennesaw Tom's assertion to the contrary, whether or not to report is indeed a judgment call. Draconian behavior in the manner of reporting, such as taking an infant to a Disney park, would not be tolerated by the juvenile justice system. It is inherent in a mandatory reporter to use their training, innate common sense and reasoning skills before taking the huge step of reporting someone. The consequences last a lifetime, whether the report is right or wrong. Noticing a child in a locked automobile, observing burn marks in unusual places, seeing a child struck about the face, etc., are obvious calls to make. However, the act, in and of itself, of taking an infant to a Disney park is not reason to report. (Being childless, I've never understood why a parent would want to inconvenience themselves by voluntarily undertaking all the necessary duties to care for an infant while at a park, but that's another topic and not germaine to this thread.) Trying to justify this as a reportable act by saying some noises are too loud is not analyzing the situation in its entirety. I'd be willing to venture that an infant can generate a cry louder than any noise for no particular good reason other than to do it, or if someone took away a bottle or pacifier before the child was done with it. The list of noises an infant can encounter without going to a park is practically infinite. While there's no evidence to suggest his intentions are anything less than admirable, his conclusions unfortunately are fatally flawed.

By starting a thread and making such a statement, and then categorically defending himself after so many people had pointed objections, he has opened himself up to all manner of criticism. What he interprets as personal attacks from my vantage point don't seem to be much more than opinions about his professional judgment, but if he takes it personally, nothing will change that. It is the height of naivete though to think something like he's experienced here wasn't going to occur.

Good point, Nikki. I went to DL in January 05 when I had the flu.
