They bought the technology from a start-up called RealD. It is pretty incredible stuff but the conversion cost per screen is about $80k. Still a lot but RealD in conjunction with Disney are pushing to get 1,000 projectors out there by the end of the year.

I am surprised that Disney haven't pushed Cars into 3-D. I wonder whether we could see a re-release of it in 3-D later in the year?

I was very surprised at that myself.

I saw Chicken Little in 3-D. I thought the movie itself was "just okay" but the 3-D was just awesome. When given the opportunity, I would gladly pay the extra bucks to see any animated film in 3-D using that system.

Basically, the computer analyzes the differences between frames, and maybe gets a couple of hints from the operator regarding camera motion. Using that data, the computer is able to build a 3D model of the movie, and re-render it from two slightly different perspectives (eyeballs).

IIRC, reports were that it was quite spectacular.
