I thought the movie itself was "just okay" but the 3-D was just awesome. When given the opportunity, I would gladly pay the extra bucks to see any animated film in 3-D using that system.

Basically, the computer analyzes the differences between frames, and maybe gets a couple of hints from the operator regarding camera motion. Using that data, the computer is able to build a 3D model of the movie, and re-render it from two slightly different perspectives (eyeballs). IIRC, reports were that it was quite spectacular.
