I had the same thought: either it will be great, or it will totally suck (I lean towards the latter).

Just seemed like a cute joke UNTIL Lucas put in some E.T.'s in the galactic senate. Though most have said it's just a "shout out" to the two director friends, if you think about it the two stories COULD be connected. E.T. comes to Earth from a galaxy far, far away...AND the sort of powers he has, levitation etc..., could indicate that E.T. is a Jedi OR that EVERYONE from that galaxy (remember Star Wars was "a long time ago"), have evolved to the point where they are on the level of the Jedi (E.T. making the bikes fly, for example, is something even a Jedi couldn't do "back then"). Just thought that was neat.
