In 2010 ALL housing assitence was 58 Billion. All food was 98 Billion Other income assetance ( which I assume is general welfare ) was 181 Billion So a bit over 300 Billion and likely a decent chunk of that is not really welfare. The numbers I gave came from the actual CBO budget numbers: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/usbud...ist.html Table 3.2

Unconditional surrender was the Republican demand in the health care debate. That demand led to an unmitigated defeat. Unconditional surrender has become the Republican demand in the debt demand. The original Republican plan was to threaten to tip the country into default unless the GOP got everything it wanted. That threat is proving empty, as Republicans' business constituencies mutiny against their party's dangerous tactics. If blackmail won't work -- and negotiation is not allowed by the party's own taboos -- then the party that asked for everything is on its way to becoming the party that got nothing. Only it's not just the GOP that is the loser. It's the whole country.<<

I agree with Frum in this - wall street is yanking on the GOP like a leash on a crazy dog. The real problem is that Boehner has no control over his own house members, and cannot be counted on to deliver anything - even bills they support. He needs the minority democrats to join with him to get anything at all passed through the house, but he's got nothing to bargain with, and the dems know it. So he's now an empty suit and essentially irrelevant to the process. In the meantime, the crazies in the GOP house decide that now's the time to take up constitutional amendments - something they can brag about to the folks back home. And we slowly continue to circle closer to the drain . . .
