They just try too hard to impress all the tourists. The Mira Costa is very definitely formal which is also different for a Disney hotel. Children really do seem out of place there. The Mira Costa rooms are serviceable. I'm over six feet tall and so a choice of something other than a double bed would be greatly appreciated, but I understand I'm not really in the target market. And yes, the view from the hoity-toity rooms is worth it. It's by far the best and most amazing view from any Disney brand resort anywhere. Sitting in the room, drinking morning espresso, listening to the area music as the park stirs to life...that's really "magic". It is the only hotel where you truly have the feeling of "never leaving the park".

Walking down the guest hallways, note the intricate scenes in the wallpaper panels. There are actually two sets of scenes: one at eye level for adults, and one at eye level for smaller kids. The design is kind of neutral between, so adults might totally miss that there's another set of designs at kids level. Obviously, you don't choose a kid-friendly hotel based on the wallpaper in the hallway, but it is a nice touch and shows that someone was thinking about kids during the design phase. Regarding the pool at the MC, it does indeed cost to go there. But, according to the website, there's a poolside bar/snack area that you don't have to have pool admission for in order to eat there. I've never been there myself, but I plan to on my next visit in order to check out the pool area.
