While I can understand that some women think the door holding is unnecessary, I don't think it's appropriate to make a political issue out of it by criticizing the door holder.

To me, that means they're so tenuous in their own beliefs that they find something like this threatening.

I wouldn't expect a woman to be offended at a man holding a door for them any more than I would expect a man to be offended if a woman held the door for him.

If this happens again, say, "I'm sorry, I thought I was holding the door for a lady. Obviously, I was wrong."

This has turned into a bit of a game now and he will go out of his way, often defying gravity and leaping over the car or nearby objects to reach the door first so he can open it. Just his way of being polite and silly.

I do appriciate when guys open doors and do the 'old fashioned' gentalmanly things for women. I always get warm fuzzies when my boyfriend opens a door for me. Think how much nicer it would be to go out to the mall or park, for example, and everyone was polite to each other.

It could really go either way!!

I couldn't agree more. There's nothing wrong with a polite gesture.

My dad still holds a car door open for my mum after 38 years and I'm sure if they had sons, he'd have taught them to do the same. I always hold a door open for someone behind me when I'm walking through it, but I think that's just common courtesy.

Just like today when I went to lunch with a co-worker - he held the doors open for me, AND (this freaked me out) - he opened the car door for me. Last guy who did that was DlandDug when he & I hung out at WDW (Jamie truly does have a wonderful husband - I got a teensy taste of what a gentleman he is that day, and I've seen the same thing over & oover again the couple of other times I've hung out with Doug). Anyhow, my buddy at work today really surprised me, as I figured he'd be one who didn't do that stuff based on, well, his behavior at work. Not quite a gentleman at work, but apparently it comes out if he's alone with a person! lol

Oh, and my DH used to open car doors for me, but not so much anymore. Oh, well. At least my sweetie got a haircut & shave today - YAY! :)

I'm in the '70s portion right now, and during the Women's Movement segment, Leonard Maltin says this:

"I had been raised that you, ya know, pull out a chair for a lady, hold the door, things like that. Suddenly, here I am in college having my first real relationships with young women, and some of them would shoot you the dirtiest look if you would hold the door for them. You know, 'How dare you?'".

A little info nugget also popped up that said "Activist Gloria Steinem once said, 'A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.'"

Ummm, ok, I wasn't planning on being your doorman. I was just trying to be courteous but I guess the favor of an acknowledgement in return was too much to ask for!
