Bacteria in lake water is a problem during the summers here in Florida. We hear about deaths (especially children) from the bacteria entering the body, causing illness and sometimes death.

Most of the counties in Florida regularly test lake water and will close lakes that have too high a concentration of bacteria. I believe Disney has had at least one death from bacteria in it's lake water and possibly more
