That was the big surprise for me as well (and made me curse out my TV, lol, as I was rooting for Pan's Labyrinth big time).

Heh, Jack. . . that man is just such a legend, and I, like Ellen, love how he's always down in front, sporting those sunglasses and grinning. I thought the bald look made him look like Mr. Clean, though, lol.

When Ellen announced Michael Mann's montage "Ode To Us Americans," I really thought the whole theater was gonna start groaning and booing. The show was way too long as it is, we don't need all the salutes.

The opening was weird, too. Was it supposed to be an eHarmony ad? The show needs to start off with a bang. That opening was a noisy, muddled thud.

Speaking of which, it was also a big mistake opening up with art direction, etc. I guess they wanted to extend the Jennifer Hudson suspense as long as they could (since it's one of the few things America would have cared about), but the show really needs to start off with some excitement, otherwise it feels like it never started. Give a big award first.

And I'm sorry, but the naked tumbling creatures were creepy, annoying, and unecessary. They made a gun. Congratulations.

I haven't seen HAPPY FEET, but I don't mind that CARS lost. It was sub-par Pixar. I did really want LITTLE MATCH GIRL to win, though.

I agree... And I mentioned it to Mr. Alice. Haven't they always (for as long as I can remember) opened with Best Supporting Actor?

I liked the tumbling naked thing. :)

And I really liked the Costume Design thing this year - WAY better than looking at slides of drawings, etc. Very cool.

But, although I haven't seen Forest Whitaker's film... from the clip, I thought he was the stand-out winner.

There were a lot of moments last night when someone in rehearsals should have just said "no, that's not going to work", such as the gospel singers at the beginning and the Will "Why Do People Find this Man Funny" Farrell song and poor sad Celine Dion and the banal "on his road to the Oscars" tripe and the akward trips backstage and ... you get my point.

The movie's good when he's not on screen. When he's on screen the movie kicks it up a notch.

But it's got Larry the Cable Guy! ;-)

Peter O'Toole's clip was good, but I nearly jumped when the camera panned to him in the audience and he was a LIVING CORPSE! (!)

"Creepy"? "Annoying"? Unnecessary yes, but a great original and visual flavor for the show. Movies aren't necessary either, but we like them. ;-) I don't understand why some people really don't like this troupe---I found them extremely talented, creative, and inspiring. Since this is an awards show for something in the realm of the arts, I think integrating another art form for the presentation is a great idea.

Yeah, I don't see why the hostility towards this group. It was performance art. Som people get it, some don't. It reminded me of performance art of the 70's. No SFX, nothing 'in your face'...just simple body art performance.
I think it would have taken away from the show if it were BMG, Stomp, or Riverdance.

Thank you! The fact that they were original and creative and not the same old 'song and dance' that we've seen, made it enjoyable and unique.

He was preparing for a part. The competition is stiff these days.
