It depends on what you refer to as American as well as whether you're in Beijing or Hong Kong vs. some far off province.

Chinese in Beijing do frequent KFC (there must be one on every corner) and McDonald's as well as Pizza Hut and Papa John's, which are considered premium brands over there and of a MUCH higher quality than what you get in the USA.

There are other American chains from Sizzler to Friday's to Outback that do attract Chinese (usually younger demos).

HK is another world entirely. Incredible Chinese cuisine and really anything and everything from Italian to high end American steak chains like Morton's and Ruth Chris.

So the answer to your question is YES ... at least in the big world class cities, Chinese do dine in American restaurants.

Hmmm, yes, the UK is interesting and getting better. Traditionally the food is quite bland, but some is very good. For restaurants, Indian is very popular (in fact the Scots voted curry the national dish - it is a carry over from the colonies). In cities, you can get anything. But in smaller communities, the stand by are Carveries (trad english roasts), Indian, chinese, italian, Fish and chips, and Thai has been gaining popularity. In some comunities, there are some great Caribbean restaurants. For take away/fast food - those are populara well as McD, BK, KFC (british african carribean teens seem addited to fried chicken), and kebabs - pitta stuffed with spiced lamb, cabbage, onions, tomato, chillis and chilli sauce.

In cities, greek, middle eastern and tapas are popular choices.

I will talk about traditional regional cuisine next post.

Ironically, British cuisine is my least fav. What is interesting though is that despite the fact the UK is the size of California, because it is so ancient, the accents and dishes change about every 30 miles or so. British food can be very dull or very flavourful. a mix of domestic ingredients and the rations in wartime britain have a profound effect (british cakes and most cookies or biscuits as they are called here as very dry and not very sweet - due to butter, oil, sugar and chocolate being rashioned for over 10 years - it had an impact). However, there are gorgeous cheeses, breads, fish recipes, and things like Cornish Pasties (think beef stew in a dolly madeson pie shape).

In the west country, where they talk like stereotypical pirates, Pasties, crab, fish are local specialities.

In the midlands, Chicken Tikka Mossala was invented - lovely.

Lancashire Hot Pot and Scouse from Liverpool are very good stews.

Steak and kidney, and steak and ale pies are popular. Rabbit and lamb are cheap working class dishes (including shepherd's pie - lamb mince in gravy with mashed potatoes on top). chicken is everywhere. Beef and venison are the more expensive. Also Pheasant and goose are popular on special occassions.

Potatoes, turnips, peas, and carrots are the most popular accompliaments.

Yorkshire has a wonderful yorkshire pudding (a savoury, crispy crepe/souffle type thing served with a roast meal.

In scotland there is Haggis (sheeps bladder stuffed with meat and barley), neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes), smoked salmon and mars bar fritters.

Sausage (bangers) or savoury pies and mashed potatoes are popular too.

If dining out, you will find this food in pubs and carveries.

Also, sausage rolls (sausage meat in pastry) are popular. And sandwiches have butter, and unless you state otherwise, it is assumed you take milk in tea and coffee.

The brits seem obsessed with cream (no sugar used) in cakes and on deserts. Or custard.

Rubarb, steamed puddings (very rich cakes), apple pie (with little sugar), mincemeat (sweet yucky mixed fruit including lemon and orange peels), as well as ice cream are very popular.

I do think the UK has the best chocolate and cheeses in the world.

My pallet is more continental European with some American tastes. But not everyone here eats traditionally either.

I am pleased because the UK has diversified so much in the 22 years I have lived here. when I first moved here, I hated the food. Now I have some UK favs, but I would rather eat ethnic (and while I am at it, most brits overboil there veg and cremate their meat - unlike the Europeans). Thankfully my wife has a similar pallet to mine.

They make a fair Bangers, and Mash at the Rose and Crown In Epcot CDD. It's also very reasonably priced at around $16.00, I believe.

Does anyone in your family make a Cornbread Dressing bobbelee. I'm looking for a family to adopt me for Turkey, and Cornbread dressing left overs from Thanksgiving. My wife's family have Oyster dressing for Thanksgiving, I think they could possibly be Yankee spies!
