LOL! I've been thinking there is nothing less maverick than calling oneself a maverick. If you have to tell people you're a maverick, then you aren't going about it correctly. And it's just creepy, like referring to one's self in the third person. Or using the term "one's self."

I've always had a slight aversion to anyone being labeled a "maverick." I guess I've always associated it with someone that can't play along with the rules and being able to get away with it, without necessarily accomplishing good things as a result. But as it was ascribed to McCain in general from time to time in the past, it didn't really bother me.

But when the campaign seemed to pick it up as a talking point, it became bothersome. Then, when he picked Palin, who was herself labeled as a "maverick," it became just too much. And then when the McCain/Palin team chose to continue the use of the term as a campaign talking point, and especially with Palin's repeated use of it during the VP debate, it's just way too much at this point.

And, this provides an opportunity for me to comment on something that I've been meaning to do so about for some time. Check this story out about Troopergate:

    <a href="http://www.pubrecord.org/politics/396-alaskas-former-top-cop-files-complaint-against-palin.html" target="_blank">http://www.pubrecord.org/polit...lin.html</a>

<<< In a six-page complaint, Monegan’s attorney Jeffrey Feldman said Palin’s series “inconsistent and changing explanations” for firing Monegan has damaged his reputation. At first she said she wanted to take the department that Monegan headed in a "different direction." In recent weeks, Palin and campaign officials said Monegan was fired for insubordination. >>>

Gee, it's almost as if Monegan was fired for being, well, a maverick! I suppose maverickism is in the eye of the beholder, and especially dependent on which side of the stick you're on.

This was exactly my thought. It's like what SNL said about Eliot Spitzer after being busted for using Emperor Clup VIP. They pointed out that if something has VIP in the name, you can bet it's not for VIPs. If you go to VIP Nail Salon in mid-town, you won't see Keira Knightley in there.

Calling yourself a maverick is like calling yourself humble. Once is too many times.

Second, some of the explanations for the kids' presence and the fact some of the event organizers were surprised to see them there. In other words, they were not invited. In some instances, the organizers were froced to accomodate them and it cost them money, others not, but when she capriciosuly and arbitrarily brought them along, knowing they'd be taken care of (wink, wink), that's an abuse of office.

Ultimately, yes, it's Alaska's problem and it isn't as if she's got tens of thousands in a freezer somewhere like Rep. Jefferson did (at least not that we're aware yet, it could be stuffed in a moose head), but it is yet another indication she's hardly a maverick, hardly a reformer, she's a crook like a lot of them.

Once she takes office, her responsibilities lie with the office and the state of Alaska. She knows going in the demands of the job. If it takes her away from the kids, that's just too bad. Quit having babies. That's not what she was elected to do. Have someone else take care of the kids. God forbid, if she ever becomes VP, and blows off a meeting an important meeting or has her attention distracted on a crucial trip because Piper keeps getting lost on the streets of Thailand when the brat shouldn't have been there in the first place. A politician gets to a certain level of office they implicitly agree the country comes first. Country first, get it? Doesn't sound to me like she's able to do that.

In my old life, we would catch four or five buyers or assistant buyers each year for padding their expenses. Some would give us time stamped receipts that would out them in two ot three cabs, a restaurant and a plane all at once. Some would alter the amounts paid. Some would even fake going on the trip and some would mnake it an all expense paid vacation and bring the family, just like Palin did, and try and pass them off as employees or consultants. All were fired, most were prosecuted. The rules are pretty plain about it all, and changing things after the fact was always an indicator to me that something was amiss. Always.

Remember the old joke: First prize is a week in Philadelphia. Second prize is two weeks in Philadelphia.

(Note: I LIKE Philly. But my grandfather could tell you all the slams going back to WC Fields.)
