When they signed the Jackass guys, they knew what they were getting. It was part of the plan. But with Cruise, who tried to pass himself off as a good boy is now acting crazy. that is the difference.

My own paraniod hunch is that it was largely prompted by the pharmaceutical industry, who can't be very happy with tom running around saying that drugs aren't a solution and only mask a problem. They don't like talk like that - they're reaping billions with a 'b' too.

In my own private conspiracy world, I can see pharmaceutical kingpins pressuring redstone and paramount to clip his wings.

But as already mentioned, cruise is sitting on a personal fortune, is riding high on three recent monster hits, and has the ability to cut most any deal he wants, so he'll be just fine.

The one to watch is going to be baby suri - if she even exists. She's going to be like athena onassis - tracked by the press for her entire life. And tom's even got two other kids with nicole that nobody cares about. Lucky them.

Tom cruise can act. Even Mickeal Caine was more impressed with Cruise's performance in Rainman than the Oscar winner Hoffman. TC's execution of the "straight man" was dead on. Anyone seen Taps--- Cruises's smaller role but very convincing nonetheless. Or how about Gerry Maguire where he was nominated for best actor. But his best performance was in Collateral, simply stellar acting.

I would put him up there with Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, John Malkovitch, Tom Hanks, Robin williams, Phillip Hoffman and Clive Owen

What I don't like is Tom Cruise as a person:

The Tom Cruise who dumped Nicole - apparently out of the blue - just short of their 10th anniversary. (Lots of people have been divorced, but most of us actually DISCUSS it with each other in advance of filing papers).

The Tom Cruise who goes on and on and on about that ridiculous CULT he belongs to and has now engulfed Katie Holmes in.

The Tom Cruise that was clearly a pompous jerk when talking with Matt Lauer and trashing Brooke Shields and every other person who's ever been on anti-depressants. His attitude was completely over-the-top and inexcusable.

I could forgive the couch-jumping - he just looked like a fool trying to convince some unbelieving public that he's mad for Katie, but whatever.

And the whole Secret Suri thing is just plain WEIRD.

Jealous...? No. But thanks for the laugh. ;-)

Sure, he can: One kind of role, that of the cocky "hero." And he does it very well. Thing is, that is the majority of his acting career.

A.J. HAMMER [host of CNN's "Showbiz Tonight"]: So, Harvey, what the heck is going on here with Tom Cruise? Is this just more damage control from his camp?

LEVIN: Oh my god. I think so. Absolutely.

I mean, do you think this is really coincidence? He could have gone over to her house for the last three and a half months to apologize. He chose the week he got canned from Paramount to do it.

I mean, Tom Cruise has to do damage control. And the comments he made about Brooke Shields probably are the most damaging that he has made in the last year.

And he knew when he went over there that ultimately this would surface and be in the press. And I think this is a huge step and an acknowledgment by Tom Cruise that he hasn`t been handling things very well.

HAMMER: Now, when you say damaging, of course, you`re not talking about his interpersonal relationship with Brooke shields. You`re talking about the fact that this teed off a lot of people.

I mean, even if Brooke accepts Tom Cruise`s apology, do you think that it`s even possible that all of those people who were so upset with him for the outrageous things he said about antidepressants and postpartum depression, that they would -- that they would actually forgive him and that they are going to start going to his movies now? And they said they wouldn`t in the past.

LEVIN: Well I think he has problems on two levels, A.J. One is he seemed so strident when he made the comments on the "Today" show that it`s real hard to believe that suddenly he is saying, well, I didn`t mean it anymore. So I think it`s going to be hard to swallow.

The second big problem he has is there are a lot of people in Hollywood who are really powerful who have kids who are on a lot of drugs that Tom Cruise has been slamming. And there are a lot of people who are ticked off at him. And I`m not sure that this is going to make everything better.
