I recommend staying at the Carrousel Inn & Suites. We always stay there and love it. It's very nice and is right across the road.

From what I've read in recent reviews on TripAdvisor, though, they've done a lot of renovating over the last year or so. No one's mentioning plastic on the beds now (I hope they've done away with THAT... One reviewer did report seeing new mattresses being brought into newly renovated rooms.)

I've already requested a room on the second floor and will definitely ask for a renovated room (if they haven't finished all of them, but it sounds like they probably have.)

My main reason for booking PVI this time is the location because I'm traveling on my own this time... Don't want to make the trek to the Candy Cane at 1 a.m. on foot if I miss the last shuttle. ;-)

I did check out the Carousel Inn... They've got major construction going on and according to one reviewer "mushy" beds (I REALLY need a firm mattress for my lousy back. :) They're ranked just two notches above PVI and overall the two properties sound pretty parallel. :)

Wish me luck... I'll report back!

We had stayed at the Park Vue a couple of times. The first time, there were roaches in the bathroom. The second time there was a giant spider between the sheets and the blanket. At the time, I thought this was "normal" for California and just went with it.

The third time we made reservations and showed up in the morning. The front desk guy was acting kind of weird. He told us our room wouldn't be ready until 3:30, but didn't offer to store our luggage. Finally, I asked and he was like, "Uh yeah... that room over there." It was unlocked and empty except for our bags, which made me a little nervous, but I just went with it.

We came back from the park at 3:00 to see if the room was ready a little early. The same guy from the morning (assistant manager) told us the room would be ready at 3:30 and we could wait in the lobby.

We sat on the couch, waiting for the magical time. We watched him walk out the door at 3:15. At 3:30 we approached the desk to check in and were told we had no reservation with them. :-O

I had a confirmation number. I had confirmed over the phone. I had confirmed that morning when we arrived. I had confirmed at 3:00 pm!! Suddenly we don't have a reservation?! What the ---???

As we stood there and argued with the girl, another family came in... and another... and another... soon there were about 5 families all standing around with "no reservations". We had all confirmed before arrival.

The girl refused to help us find another hotel.

Presently, a tour bus full of high school band students arrived. It turns out they had booked up 1/2 the hotel and they were paying twice the nightly rate that the rest of us had been quoted. INTERESTING...

At that point, it turned into an all-out screaming match between one of the families and the front desk girl (because she was refusing to help us find accomodation and refusing to call her manager who was off for the weekend).

Eventually the police were called. I was sent in as the representative of those of us who were jacked.

The police weren't able to make the girl do anything, they just calmed everyone down.

At that point, I got on the phone with Yahoo travel and they rebooked all five families at the 2 Best Westerns on Harbor.

Just disgusting lack of customer service.

We will NEVER and I mean NEVER stay at the Park Vue again.

wonderingalice, have you checked the Best Western Park Place Inn? It's head, shoulders above the Park Vue Inn & right at the cross walk as well.

If you want a very nice hotel in the DL area for the cheapest price possible, use Priceline.com.

The Hyatt Regency, for example, regularly offers inventory in the $33-50 range. The brand new Doubletree is offering rooms right now. Why anyone would want to stay at those mom-and-pop dumps instead is beyond me.

If you're not familiar with PL.com, check out BiddingforTravel.com, a great resource.

wendebird, the Best Western's sold out for my dates, unfortunately.

Spirit of 74... I normally stay at the Candy Cane Inn - not sure if that falls into your "mom and pop" category, but it's absolutely lovely and wonderful everytime. The main reason I don't do the Hyatt, etc., is location/park transportation. I don't want to be held hostage by ART or hotel shuttles (the Candy Cane shuttle is VERY timely and it's close enough to walk if need be).

The Candy Cane is also sold out now... *LOL* Looks like I'll be braving the evils of PVI. On a plus side for them, the online room rate (I booked through their web site) has dropped twice since I made my reservation and twice the nice gentlemen on the phone have lowered the rate on my reservation. And I definitely have a name to fall back on. :)

Also, Spirit of 74, we are normally in the same boat with wonderingalice as we don't generally have a car. With our upcoming trip, we'll be going to San Diego/Carlsbad for a day, so we will have one this time. I did the Hotwire thing and got the Extended Stay America on Clementine for 38 bucks/night!! 38!! This is for July 14-17. I was doing cartwheels for that rate. :)

I'll tell you what... If the current posters on TripAdvisor are lying, I will drag them through the muck on a follow-up review when I get home!

That was the last time we stayed there. But that wasn't the first time they screwed up our reservations.....

In order to convince my sweetie that it was a good idea to stay at a location off Harbor, I had to tell him how much we are saving. (About $275!!) Now he just keeps thinking of ways to spend the "extra" money. :p

I got hooked on PL.com back in the good, old days of 2000-01. I still recall spending 10 nights at the Anaheim Marriott for $20 a night -- and, no, that isn't a typo.

The prices points have gone up as the economy has gotten better and DL is having a great 50th Anniversary Celebration, but what hasn't changed is the fact great deals are out there.

I may not get the Hyatt for $28 anymore, but it sure is worth $38 or $48. It's late and I don't know if you guys/gals see where I'm coming from. But PL.com has never let me down when booking a 3-star hotel in Anaheim and environs.

As for transporation, again, I have used PL and stayed at the Hyatt, Sheraton, Marriott, Anabelle, Doubletree Orange, Residence Inn (older one of the 5), West Coast and Holiday Inn and they all had free and reliable transport.

And you aren't going to get Hyatt quality bedding at Park Vue or any of those type places. :)

It may not be 1000-thread Egyptian cotton *LOL* but for the amount of time we spend sleeping/in the room, it's quite nice. ;-)

I know that a lot of places have shuttles, but I really like the option of not using one. Even with the Candy Cane shuttle running like clockwork as it always does, we still have a 15-25 minute wait sometimes, depending on when we get to the pick-up area. For my upcoming visit, especially, I don't want the hassle of any of that. All I have to do is walk across the street. Nice! :)
