If you've got a better theory, let's have it.

    "Simple white country folk."

Claiming people oppose President Obama simply because of his race.

Why is it that people exhibiting just the slightest racist comments towards President Obama get called out on the carpet (rightly so) but when it goes the other direction everyone is quiet on the matter?

This is what I remember him most for, and you're right, the covers are usually awful compared to the more interesting originals, done by black artists. They whitewashed them alright, and sucked any soul right out of them.

If anybody has seen the musical "Dreamgirls" (either the show or the movie), they reference Pat Boone with a character doing these cover versions. It's kind of funny, actually. They sing a song "Cadillac Car", and it starts off with the soulful version, and then blends into the very boring cover version.

My cousins and aunts and uncles began telling jokes about that "coon Obama" and how the White House is now the Plantation House. Mentions of wanting assassination were made. I'd had a few, and made comments about ignorant, racist MFs. It ended badly.

This isn't everybody. But these people are real and they're more numerous than too many people want to admit. This wasn't in the backwoods of Mississippi. It was in a suburb of Salt Lake City.

I just don't see it. Your point seems to be that it's unfair to lump together the people who openly espouse their loathing of the president by their common denominators. And yet - they're uniformly white, usually "religious", and have an uncanny ability to ignore all facts and evidence in favor of their preconceived notions. They feel comfortable enough within their crowd to say hateful and stupid things openly, assuming that everyone is on the same page as them.

Why do you want to rise to the defense of these people?

Besides that issue, he's still regularly called an extreme socialist and more, in spite of being pretty darn moderate overall. Even when he takes positions that Republicans have previously been for, he can't catch a break.

It's easy to say there are extremist nuts on both sides, and I'm sure there are. But I'm not seeing an exact duplication of the nonsense the GOP side is currently engaging in (that evolution is a "theory that's out there" and so forth) on the left.

I'd just be happy to see some more folks on the right not feel compelled to make air quotes with their fingers whenever they say the word science.

Yes, because Obama hates our veterans. I agree the problem is "the base" but the candidates are playing very much to that crowd as well, which only fosters it along.

It's this constant drip-drip-drip message, in many forms, that Obama isn't an American, or hates America, or whatever.

What's also very disturbing in that ad is the use of "attack" language once again. Using words like "Assault" makes Obama sound very threatening - like he is personally attacking our veterans, who need to defend themselves. They're deliberately using war-like phrases to scare people - and scared people don't always act rationally. God help us if some nut-job decides that the only way to stop the perceived "attack" from Obama is to strike first.

<I agree the problem is "the base" but the candidates are playing very much to that crowd as well, which only fosters it along.>

Absolutely. What Stewart actually meant is that the problem FOR THE BASE is not the candidates, but themselves. For no matter how much the candidates pander (and boy are some of them pandering), none of them can be "pure" enough for the wackos. Thus the very conservative Perry, just because he takes a compassionate stance on one issue (kids of illegal immigrants) faces their wrath.

This has led to a series of "if only X would get in the race" moments. Stewart pointed out that the latest big clamor is for Chris Christie... but if he actually DID enter the race, very soon the base wouldn't like him very much.

I'm not crazy about Christie, but Stewart showed a clip in which Christie, to his credit, defended a Muslim judge he'd appointed against unwarranted attacks and fears that he'd somehow impose Sharia law on us all. In it, he said:

“Sharia law has nothing to do with this at all. It’s crazy. It’s crazy. The guy’s an American citizen who has been an admitted lawyer to practice in the state of New Jersey, swearing an oath to uphold the laws of New Jersey, the constitution of the state of New Jersey, and the Constitution of the United States of America... This Sharia law business is crap. It’s just crazy. And I’m tired of dealing with the crazies."

Stewart then did a stage whisper directed at the GOP base: "He's talking about YOU!" :)

Even if Christie hadn't said this, the base would soon have figured out that he's a northern social moderate - something they can't stand, the same thing that doomed Guiliani, and would have doomed Trump, had he been serious.
