That's what I was thinking. Also, this wouldn't be an instance of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole like Nemo in Tomorrowland or Pooh in Critter Country. The concept fits the land perfectly.

    Inspiration!

Hope for a better future in mass transit!

An end someday to getting stuck in choked freeways that cannot handle any more cars .. And hairy auto accidents like a massive semi piled up on the center median that I barely snaked by one month ago on the I-84 heading out of Danbury CT on my way back to the Bradley International Airport outside of Hartford, and almost missed my damn flight.

Since the Peoplemover's debut to the country in 1967 .. whether it's a trip from Windsor Locks to Westport CT .. or Anaheim to Los Angeles CA ... or Phoenix to Tempe AZ .. this country is largely out of touch with mass transit. 40 years later ... there's ONLY a half a dozen small systems in the country .. and everyone thinks it's a "Been there, done that" format as if we're ready for teleportation!

Orange County with 34 cities within an a massive basin containing over 17 million people CAN NOT get it together in 21st Century to have even it's FIRST mass transit/monorail/peoplemover system!

Nostalgia has nothing to do it, as far as I'm concerned. If that was the case .. I'd be asking for the same squared canopied 4-car trains that were designed in 1965!

For me it's about being excited about the possibilities for the real world around me.

And Disneyland is the perfect stage!

Disneyland is not all fun and games .... It's often in the past been a place to showcase possibilities to the world outside it's berm.

A peoplemover in Tomorrowland is not just a 15 minute bird's eye view of the land ... It's an opportunity to IMAGINE .. to DREAM ... to be EXCITED .... that life doesn't have to be a sea of Hummer H3s and Toyota Prius' all stuck on the 405 getting out of South Coast Plaza .. no matter how many times this freeway has been widened in 15 years .. and is STILL a massive mess no matter how times they try to widen it!

Mass transit HAS TO get itself firmly off the ground ....... and this one spot in Anaheim CA needs to start inspiring this country once again!

It's a pipe dream. People in this counrty are too in love with their cars. It's still the ultimate expression of individuality and freedom... regardless of the traffic situation.

Plus you have a huge fight on your hands trying to get the dollars from the government to build monorails and peoplemovers, especially with lobbyists from the automotive industry on the other side.

Short term? Yes. I agree with you! But as population grows (Long Term)... so do the number of cars on aging freeways that won't be getting any better!

Let me give you an example:
Here in OC we have what we call "The Orange Crush". It's where the 5, 22, and the 57 Freeways all merge together. Heading north for more than 20 years ... at 3 lanes in each direction ... was a stand-still....
Dateline 1996: Santa Ana 5 Freeway widening complete with now SIX lanes in each direction .. north through the crush was fine for all about a year or two. It quickly became a nasty crawl again. Didn't matter they doubled the size of this freeway.

Tinkering with freeways into 2070 is not going to solve anything. Except go 2 more miles per hour.

Peoplemovers and Monorails are going to take cash ... no doubt .... But heavy population centers have to START somewhere .. and the systems can expand from there.

Taking Orange County for example ... If people think we can keep traveling the same way we are now in 2070 .. and think population isn't going to change in the next 63 years ... Well .. now there's a pipe dream.

Yes ... the fascinating RED Car system! :) Thank you for bringing it up. I'm familiar with this interesting LA history.

My mom said she use to pick up the RED car in Long Beach and head into downtown with her friends in mid 1950s.

With lines traveling into Tustin, Seal Beach, Santa Ana and more ... the saddest part was not holding on the right-of-way.

Now ... what I think is a little glimmer of hope for OC's future may it be lightrail, or something more futuristic like Peoplemovers or Monorails ... Is there were a few freight railroad lines that cut through .. as they delivered goods to a variety of industrial plants throughout OC. Those railroad lines have recently been removed ... but the RightOfWay is still there. Just waiting to be plucked by mass transit planners.

May not happen anytime soon ... but as I tried to hint for OC's longterm .. and the longterm for other large population centers throughout America ........ eventually ... atleast a little something needs to get off the ground ... And let it "blossom" as the public takes notice to it.

And to bring this back on topic.....

I'd love for Tomorrowland to get people's minds again on futuristic transit systems ... as freeways are not as clear-sailing as they once were in 1967!

4,000 feet of track to do anything pushing up to a real "futuristic" speed would have the ride over within 90 seconds.

Walt was a very forward thinking man... and quite the cheerleader. Without someone like him, I think it's impossible for anyone to see a new PM as anything other than an ride in an theme park.

Yep, and if you want to see real public rail in action just leave Southern California. Pretty much every major city in the US has some kind of modern public rail system in place.

Orlando has had their peoplemover system for at least a couple of decades now. Even New York has a peoplemover system (airtrain) at JFK International now. It has easy connections to both intercity rail and the NY subway. I rode the system a few weeks ago and it is phenomenal.
