Dang, now I'm REALLY not sure which way I want to see it.

alexbook - you might want to check out some of the new clips, like SaraTonin mentioned, the jungle scenes show the adventure side. After reading about how Carl is looking to fulfill his widow's dream of traveling to South America, the touching side becomes more evident. Amazing to me how they combined, love, loss, adventure and comedy into an animated film...only Pixar!

Good to hear from someone who has seen it in both 2D and 3D! I agree after a few minutes of Bolt, I didn't even realize I had the glasses on. hmm that Variety argument seems kind of weak in my opinion...sometimes I wonder if critics just want to say at least one negative comment you know? I'm still very curious to see it in 3D for myself. I actually read another interesting article about the spread of 3D films following Cannes. (Up in 3D opened the film festival - brings a lot of credibility to the medium for sure!)

From Roger Ebert by way of a Cannes review: "This is a wonderful film," Roger Ebert writes in his "unofficial" review in the Chicago Sun-Times . (He's saving his "official" one for the U.S. opening on May 29. Ebert reserves most of this review for a lengthy criticism of 3D, which, he insists, degrade the vibrant color of animated film. His advice "Find a theater showing [ Up in 2D], save yourself some money, and have a terrific visual experience."

When I saw it in 3D I enjoyed it just as well (didn't notice any color vibrancy lost, but I don't have Ebert's eye), but NEVER thought to myself, "Dang, I should have watched it in 3D first. That ruined it for me, now that I know what I was missing!"

alexbook, I know way too much more about this movie than I should, and I regret it dearly. I agree: the previews are ho-hum, but believe me....it's totally designed to be that way.

I can understand the headache argument, but promise me you will see this movie someday. It's going to be an absolute classic, I promise. You will love it, or your next meal/treat at DL will be on me. (providing we are there at the same time, duh. :)

I'll probably see it on the first or second weekend it's out, but I'll see it in 2D. Sorry.

    Heck, I didn't even know we had a 2D v 3D option. I'm not a purist. I really don't care one way or another. :)

The 3-D effect isn't overly emphasized, but I think does add a sense of depth that helps add to scenes where you are looking down from great heights.

Maybe some LPers can confirm or deny this but that is one thing to think about. I saw Up in 2D and the short was really good but I understand that may not be reason enough to not see it in 3D. FWIW I loved Up. I will definitely see it again with other friends to try and spot other Pixar references I may have missed.

I saw a post above that mentioned that Ebert, the movie critic, was recommending the 2D version because there is a 20% reduction of light/colors that occurs when wearing the 3D glasses. I just wanted to say that I really don't think you'll notice this loss of light when you see the movie in 3D, although I am sure this loss of light could be scientifically measured.

If you don't get headaches from good 3D, definitely consider the 3D version. The "3rd D" in this movie is really subtle; you won't ever see anything dancing in front of you just out of your arm's reach. It wasn't like that at all. The 3D in this movie was all all about scene enhancement. It really made you feel the depth of the scenes.

One thing that I am sure we can all agree "up"on ;) is that everyone will be able to find something to love about 'Up', whether you see it 2D or 3D!!!

I really thought that 3D enhanced the overall experience. I didn't notice that it was ever too dark (even in the dark scenes). It added another layer of depth in scenes that you wouldn't even know you were missing without it. There were just a lot of little details that you take for granted, but make it seem so real that it just makes the whole movie (the reflection of the TV on Carl's glasses in one scene and his stubble later on both really stood out to me as tiny things that made it seem so real).

Overall, it's a great movie that will do very well in either format. It has a bunch of happiness, but at the same time isn't afraid of being emotional, and even making you feel a little uncomfortable. Ellie is one of my new favorite characters, and she's not even in the film very long, but the way she is presented is top notch. They deal with tough problems in a way to let you know what happened, without ever specifically saying or showing it, which is very hard to do well. The action near the end seemed a little rushed and very different pace than the scenes before it, but that might have been on purpose. Definatley one of my favorite Pixar movies yet, and it's nice to see that they can deliver Wall-E level quality while still appealing to the general masses.
