It's triumphalism. They believe that they are a special elite, and thus have access to priviledged information. And when you remind them that Jesus said that not even the angels or the son of man know when the end will come, they will retort: that doesn't apply to us.

I don't even know why the media even gives these people the time of day. Oh wait, I do: It's good for business.

That is a very good point you make here. It's the feeling of being special that makes them act so silly I guess.

One evangelist's doomsday prediction has the world ending on Saturday, May 21. His followers and his radio network are running hundreds of billboards across the country, extolling that the apocalypse is nigh.

If it doesn't happen, though, there's an Oakland-based atheist's group ready to help disappointed/unfulfilled believers with a party on Sunday. They've also raised their own counter-billboards to point at what they see as "nonsense."

The American Atheists' 68-foot billboard near the Bay Bridge in San Francisco reads: The Rapture: You Know It's Nonsense: 2000 Years of "Any Day Now!" Similar signs are in Houston, Wichita, Kan., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

To be accurate, the "Rapture" is a recent Protestant Fundamentalist innovation. Catholic, Orthodox and Mainline Protestant Christians do not subscribe to the concept of the "Rapture".

The end of days actually works on American Central Time.

Over the course of history, untold tens of millions of people have been killed for exactly that reason. I think that some of us hope that with enough effort, study, and illumination of the issue, humanity might someday be able to put a stop to it.

Well, since America is near the end of the time-zone spectrum, I'm sure the U.S. military will have plenty of time to send up all their secret orbiters and relocate the important people to mars.

Oh, so kinda like Y2k, then. Like when you heard on New Year's Eve that the computers didn't go nuts and shut everything down in Asia and Australia, and you thought "cool, life goes on. And that money my company spent on y2k patches was well spent, huh?".

I'm planning on winning the lottery Saturday, so it'll be nice to see Japan still standing, knowing I'll make it till they pull them ping pong balls.

Sorry, but it is funny when one of the worlds best educated nations can unequivocally fall for someone that preys on their fears and worries. Just a small modicum of common sense would tell you to be skeptical of such a claim. Just for the record though, and I am glad about this, very many have mentioned it and very few have fallen behind the prediction. So that's a good thing.

Disclaimer: If by some chance I was wrong and Judgement day does come on Saturday, I was just kidding...I believed it all along! Don't burn me, bro!
