Here are the questions I keep asking myself: 1) How much did it cost to rent all those billboards? 2) How many essential social service agencies in our country have disappeared for lack of funding in the past 5 years? How many homeless shelters, pediatric medical clinics, food kitchens, and geriatric assistance organizations? 3) Could the money that was spent on those billboards have funded two or three of those agencies for the next five years? 4) Is it more worthwhile to devote one's time, energy, skills, and resources toward: a) getting people to be afraid of God, or; b) improving the quality of life of fellow humans who are in need? 5) How would a truly compassionate god answer Question #4? 6) Do I need to "respect" the positions of people who decline to consider the above questions? For me, the answer to #6 is "no." I'm not inclined to laugh at those people. I think some of them are "good-hearted," as you say. But I believe that each of them possesses some combination of stupidity and selfishness that enables and encourages them to advocate ridiculous positions that ultimately make life worse instead of better for their fellow humans. I'm not going to make fun of them. But I AM going to oppose and attack them -- and totally without feeling guilty about it.

"There are a HELL of a lot more child child molesting priests than there are child molesting teachers" Do you have hard numbers to back this up? I know that in our archdiocese that all seminarians are now run through the wringer with pyschological tests, etc. to screen out the potential bad apples.

I spent 9 years in catholic schools and frankly I never heard of or experienced any such behavior. It wasn't all that rampant. I am no longer a practicing Catholic but it had nothing to do with this particular concern.

On moral grounds alone, any "church" willing to cover their own asses over protecting children is a gigantic FAIL as far as I'm concerned.<<< Let me make it clear...I am not saying that it is OK, or that punishment should not be handed out, but, the majority of Catholics are just as shocked by what happened as anyone. What I'm saying is like any other "reported" event. The focus, rightfully, is intense. You keep hearing about it, many are just the same event rehashed. Not really as common as the media has lead us to believe. Was it wrong to hide it...of course it was. Should those responsible be exposed and punished...absolutely. What I'm saying is that the vast majority of the congregation are good people, certainly not child molesters. Since religion is supposed to be based on a belief in God, Jesus or whomever, this doesn't change that. There will be corruption in any organization that is operated by human beings. It appears that we are way less then a perfect species. The leaders of that organization during that time certainly are to be held responsible as the flawed humans that they are, but not the religion as a group. That said, I left the Catholic Church many years ago, long before I ever heard about these atrocities. That was due to basic beliefs and my own concern about the herding effect of organized religion. I still am not ready to condemn an entire religion based on the terrible actions of a few. And like it or not, when compared with the total numbers, is a few, not a majority.

It sickens me that they don't collectively do so.
Originally Posted By Mr X ***And like it or not, when compared with the total numbers, is a few, not a majority*** You keep harping on that, but I keep trying to tell you the ones *I'm* most disgusted with are the ones who covered it up, and that is a VAST number of influential people in that organization all the way up to the current sitting Pontiff.
