Yes he was, pretty much all the way to the end. He stopped dying his hair, so the pictures of him with white hair were likely taken within the last year. The girl he's holding on his shoulders, Elizabeth Hulette, passed away in 2003 of an overdose. He was one of a kind, that's for sure.

Some want straight forward answers for everything (how old is the Earth, when will Jesus return?), others are perfectly comfortable with mysterious and unknown.

I think your description of the root of religion is a bit oversimplified, which surprises me somewhat as you usually understand that explanations for human behavior are seldom cut and dry or black and white.

I would say that whether or not someone is kind or not doesn't reflect on their religious convictions. In other words, I don't believe that religion *causes* one to be "good" (or bad). It only amplifies what a person already is (like alcohol).

I definitely didn't write that comment to come off as such a deep insight sort of thing...it was just a one-off joke about the whole "alternate timeline" thing.

I do realize that it's incredibly oversimplified (religion is clearly one of the most complex issues of the human condition, to say the VERY least).

If you want my honest and thoughtful opinion on it, you might have to wait a few years while I think it over, consider and re-consider my take on it, and even then I'd bet my opinion would be lacking.

    It's incredibly complex.

(BTW ... SFGate sez Camping has reappeared and he says he will make a statement on his radio network tomorrow. I'm sure it will be less interesting than I think it will.)

They've done a good jobs of marketing it as though it's mainstream.

Their website of course, has been thoroughly raptured by all the people trying to listen to the stream. In the LA area he can be found at AM 1280. (Note to FCC: this is why broadcasting is better than broadband.)
