My parents had me reading at age three. By the time I got to Jr. High, I was reading at a level above college level. The school system I was in was having a terrible time with the reading levels of the great majority of students, so guess what? I got a free pass. I was taken out of English class in Jr. High, and only had one year of English in High School, because, boy, I sure could read well!! Except, I cannot spell, I cannot compose anything, I have a hard time with business letters and I ain't got no good grammer niether. But, boy, I can read like a son-of-a-gun. So I rely a lot on study aids like that mentioned before. I try to look up words as frequently as possible. I still have a hard time, especially without the edit feature here on L.P. But don't worry, I hear it's comming on line in 3003.

Before you post, type your response in a word program. Turn on your spell check and grammar check function. Write down each and every word that the computer corrects and choose one or two of those words. Don't worry if the word is an "easy" one. That's not the point. Write down that word (correctly spelled) and its definition from a dictionary on a separate piece of paper and study it for one day. Tape copies of it to your kitchen cabinet, on the arm of your chair, on the bathroom mirror, etc. In no time you'll be increasing your spelling without much effort. If you have no help for a word from your computer, feel free to email me for help. My address is in my profile. My brother and I were/are notorious bad spellers. I'm still the pits, but much better than I used to be. A lot of bad spelling comes from having an auditory processing disability and definitely not from intelligence. You're in good company - my brother graduated in the top 20 of his class at Harvard Law and couldn't spell "avenue" in 12th grade. One of my sons has this problem and the word-a-day technique worked really well for him. Although his hearing was okay, the processing of words just wasn't happening in the usual way. Some of it was cute - he used to say "put-prints" instead of "footprints", but things got difficult for him when he got into school and his spelling and grammar had to be right :-( If you're interested, here are some free grammar tutorials: http://www.google.com/search?h l=en&q=grammar+tutorials&btnG=Google+Search Good luck!!

Their work is often riddled with awful errors, but once they read what they wrote aloud, they are able to spot their mistakes easily. In time, they become better editors. Before publishing anything, read it out loud. And as you can see from this topic, have as many friends read it aloud as possible. There's lots of other stuff you can do. Teacher stores sell grammar workbooks designed for little kids (you can find stuff online too). Start at the lowest grade you can find, and keep going up until you find things that focus on what you're bad at. Fragments are a big problem for you, it seems. Punctuation and capitalization, too. Focus on those things. Maybe you can get a tutor? Don't do it alone. One last thing...I can be a grammar snob, I admit. But if I get an email or snail mail asking me for business, and it has ONE single mistake, I don't take them seriously AT ALL. And I don't think that's so crazy. The first thing I noticed in your letter (it nearly punched me in the eye) was the word "conserns," something a spellchecker would have fixed automatically. If you want my money, your presentation must be professional. Spelling mistakes are unprofessional. Don't waste your money until you know for sure what you are sending out is perfect.
