Which is not to say they didn't stray, surely some did, but they took it more seriously. The whole "fear of God" thing is more palpable the further you go back in these old religions (but can still be seen in crystal clarity in the "newer" religions which are still in fanaticism stage). For those in developing countries, where their situation is more hopeless than we can imagine and churches are often the only place to turn for a little help and comfort, I daresay they take the orders of the clergy a lot more seriously. All of which is to say that, for me, the notion that the church insists on threatening aids ravished populations with eternal damnation if they use a condom is, at least on par with the child rape coverups, an evil thing.

Please note, though, that God came to me last night as I lay a-sleeping and told me to mock away. He's not real happy with His church nowadays. I believe "darkness" is one of the words He used repeatedly. Some of the others I can't post because of community standards.
