They are usually very happy to support people who are supporting important charities. They aren't always keen about donating money, but most are gracious with their time if the right event is the motivation.

The way we tend to do these things at work is the company will often buy a couple of tickets (tax write offs) and either give them to deserving staff who have gone over and above the call of duty, or we run a charity raffle with even more proceedings going to the charity. When doing it like this, it is very affordable. I was at one fund raiser a while ago where people made donations for Fish and Chips and people were paying $500 for a portion of Cod and chips. Too rich for my blood, but these prices are totally in line.
