Say it with me: the WalMarting of WDW!

The MK used to be all about storytelling and that carried thru in shopping, dining, costumes, merchandise, area music, entertainment, even trash cans ... now they might as well label it Disney's Generic Magic Park.

The bottom line is, times are changing, very few people even take "family vacations" so the little things that we found so magical do not "work" on today's society. My daughter (4yrs) was talking to her friend about going on vacation and the kid said, "what's vacation???" WHAT?! How does a kid not know what vacation is?!? I'll tell you how, Dad works at his corporate job 75 hours a week so mom can live in a mansion and get her nails done, who needs a family vacation when you have a bmw in the driveway and an inground pool in the backyard? Society today is unfortunately not into "moments" they want to buy the kid the mickey stuffy and shove a lollipop in his face so they can have fun on their once in a lifetime vacation...literally. I agree it's sad, but think about it, it's true. When I was a child my family took two vacations every year, and we were broke! My dad always said, I'm not going to be lying on my death bed saying, gee I wish I spent more time in the office. We camped and packed lunches and scrimped and saved but darn it, we spent family time come heck or high water. I have a young family with two small children, we live in a "nice" area, we have lots of friends in the area, plus family members with the same family make up we have, guess how many of them are taking a summer vacation with their kids this year....NONE!!! OUt of about 20 young families I know either very well or casually, we are the ONLY FAMILY TAKING A SUMMER VACATION. However, when these family's do decide to go on vacation, they want the churn and burn version...make my kid happy, buy her a princess dress and mickey ears and get her on the rides good and fast. They aren't looking for "moments." As far as the Disney employees, yes, pathetic, another "sign of the times" as far as I'm concerned, another thing I've noticed is young adults DO NOT WORK!!! Kids don't work these days. So the few employees that anyone can actually get their hands on, are being catered to, big time. You want to look like a slob? Fine, just show up! I went to the local aquarium with my children a few weeks ago and the manager asks the little punk college student to make an announcement, and the kid turns around and goes, "can't you do it?" WHAT?! It's not just WDW, it's EVERYWHERE. It's the simple fact that WDW hasn't been spared of this horrible state that our society is in right now. sad.

I'm living proof you can do both -- have a corporate life for a long period of time...as well as take the time to enjoy the magical vacation moments. I don't work quite as much as I used to, but still 50- 60 hours per week...an we have taken 2 Disney trips a years since the mid 80's -- so let's be careful not confuse success in the business world with an "I only care about me attitude many people have today" --

And even when I worked 50 - 70 hours per week and traveled -- I did all I could to schedule time around my kids sports events, school events etc...even if it meant I was working well after they were asleep each evening..

< another thing I've noticed is young adults DO NOT WORK!!! Kids don't work these days.<

for the most part I am with you on this..but then again, when we were younger there were careers - career paths and hard work could equal success...kids today are not stupid-- they also see the offshoring of most of our white collar jobs to low cost countries like Brazil / India & Thailand -- by the millions ( yes millions) per year. There is very little - get in work hard, try and be a manager and work your way upnow--companies want you for 5 years ( 10 max) and want you gone before you accumulate a lot of vacation time, benefits, health care issues.....

the problem is much deeper than kids not wanting to work.... the generation we are creating will be one of the first to have less financial and career success than their parents... now that IS a sad legacy.

Kids are coddled much more than they used to be. My own sister made doctor's sppointments for my nephew when he was in college. How can we expect kids to work when we do everything for them? It's ridiculous!

That's just the sad thing, pixie ... Disney used to have no legit peers. They were so special and unique ... now they're just a 'brand' albeit one based on the magic they've created in the past.

And Universal certainly does better than Disney in many ways today ... from high quality food at lower prices in its parks to state of the art attractions like Spiderman, Men In Black and The Mummy ... to cleaner restrooms.

You know what spirit.. US still can't hold a candle to WDW... there attendence is half of Disney's I do see a need for improvement in areas of WDW... but I can't let that stop me from enjoying every minute Im there... I agree also.. technology has caught up with Disney's inventiveness... it's really hard to be the first and best anymore.. most big parks have copied Disney's ideas over the years , and to me thats a honor.. but its getting harder and harder to be #1...

even with the government rebates on jobs in some sectors of Quebec...still too expensive for some who continually seek less cost. The only advantage is that some customers can't always tell where they are speaking there...in some other places it is painfully obvious....

Because I frankly have zero clue.

I guess my posts are starting to tick off the powers at Disn oops, I mean LP.com, again. Gee, and I haven't even gotten around to that DLP trip report yet ;-)
