Disneyland did start out with two locomotives and two train sets. Currently, they have five locomotives and four sets of cars.

The ran side-by-side (going in the same direction ;-) .

I don't know if that's true or not, but I seem to remember reading that somewhere, which could have led to the confusion...

I'm not sure how many Viewliner trains they had, but I bet DLandDug or another LPer will know. :)

The Viewliner used a narrower 30" gauge track (the DRR is 36" gauge track--the distance in inches between the rails).

The Disneyland Railroad: Yes, it did have "two sets of track"--but only in two places. These second sets of track are called "passing sidings." There was a siding at Main Street (a vestige of which still remains) and at Frontierland.

When there were only two trains, one train would only stop at Main Street, and make a complete, non-stop trip around the Park. The other train only stopped at Frontierland before making the same non-stop trip.

When the Main Street train was boarding passengers at Main Street, the Frontierland train would use the passing siding to go around it. When the Frontierland train stopped at Frontierland, the Main Street train would depart and then go around the stopped Frontierland train, using the passing siding there. So, you would often see two trains *next* to each other, but they ALWAYS went in the same direction, basically leap-frogging their way along the line.

(As a side note--they had to go in the same direction for mechanical and practical reasons--the roundhouse was built to accommodate the engines facing the same way, and the "blowdown" vent had to be on one side of the track).

Too bad the Viewliner was before my time. Oldsmobile provided the engines and I believe the dashboards as well. Can you imagine sitting in the cab of the loco and staring at the wonderfully chrome-laden dash of a '58 Olds?
