Having southern roots on my Mom's side, I've seen that particular "wink wink" many times. Almost always it's a racial thing, something someone gives you when they think you're a racist too and they want to share that little "white bonding moment" with you. It could have been an anti-Musim thing, though as has been pointed out, this would be no less repellent. But I'm almost certain it was racial.
