I agree with Mrich that usually it work make you think that the waiting staff would lose their motivation to give good service if they have the tip built in, but some people are so cheap I can't blame them. At the Ridge, if there's not good service, the waiter or waitress would be immediately fired.

What a wonderful system for grabbing the little guy. < okay, I have never been on a wait staff..but are you saying that a wait staff person has to pay income tax on income that cannot be proven ? Somehow this just sounds wrong ... Income for the restaurant or income for the waiter or both? How can one pay income tax on non income ?

Otherwise there would be no way of proving the income. So if you get bad service, I mean really bad service, you can at least enjoy the thought that the waitperson has to pay tax on the 15% you didn't leave.

Ducky.

I'm glad to pay extra to supplement a person's salary but to be expected to jointly pay their salary is wrong. A gripe I am tired of hearing from wait staff is that they aren't paid alot....well, guess what you're paid at least minimum wage (the law is that if you don't make enough in tips the restaraunt must make up for the rest up to minimum wage), so forcing me to tip only means I am saving the restaraunt $$$, I am not necesarily giving anything extra to the staff. For example If you're paid $2.00 an hour and get one table that leaves you $3.50 then the restaurant saved $3.50 but you've actually earned nothing. Another thing is this: If you want to be paid more than minimum wage then get a better job, you wait tables....I did it too, I also did other jobs and got paid the same as a waiter, so why whould I have to pay for him to make more than minimum wage when I ONLY make minimum wage, where is MY tip? You shouldn't expect people to raise your standard of living and wages so you can make more than minimum wage when you have a minimum wage job. SOrry. Alot of people deserve tips that don't get them. What about other service jobs, like anyone who deals directly with customers, or an employee who goes the extra mile for you? And yes minimum is too low, but I shouldn't have to supplement your lifestyle

To tell someone what they do is only worth minimum wage -- regardless of what they do is just wrong...most people take pride in the jobs they do...many people with wait staff jobs have multiple jobs or are going to school full time or part time to try and make a living. I never waited tables...but I guess I had what some would consider lower level jobs when I was young.. I grew up poor, in a poor section of a large city. Through hard work and education my life today is more than I could have ever hoped for, I am truly fortunate..... BUT, I never, ever forgot where I came from......and hopefully never will. I treat all people with respect, and appreciate the wait staff, grocery bagger, store clerks the same as the CFO's and CEO's I deal with. A person's job does not define a person.. As far as other tips, I always tip valets , hotel workers, the kids who dry my car at the car wash, bartender, and anyone else I would deem appropriate when they do a good job and are courteous. I am glad I am able to do it. As far as employees that work for me who do a good job over and above, there is recognition, large and small, from cash awards to tickets to sports events or concerts etc. that most companies use.
