Completely untrue. I specifically mentioned it had LDS footnotes, etc, but the Bible itself was not altered by the LDS Church. You know that, too.

<There are "Mormon Bibles" one can purchase with these changes directly in the text.> Yeah, but they are rarely used, and that's not what's being offered. Why bring that up?

< I just find it a bit galling that Josh preaches to us about "modern prophets" out of one side of his mouth, then insists Mormons are no different in their Bible than anybody else out of the other.>

How dare we seek to find what we have in common with other Christians. How perverse.

    Talk about proselytizing!

It's not completely untrue. You were a bit insulting by telling someone to "know what they're talking about" first. We can split hairs and argue semantics all day long, but the fact is, an LDS Bible isn't just exactly like any other old King James Bible you can by in any Barnes and Noble. Entire church committees have been formed to add footnotes, to determine the role of the Joseph Smith Translation, etc. There's the LDS Dictionary in the back that gives distinctly LDS interpretations on doctrines that mainstream Christians would find decidedly different than their own beliefs.

And I have zero problem with that. Good on the church - seriously. But it's unfair for you to insult someone as if they're a dummy when you and I both know there's more to the story than that.

Not at all. But it's part of this ongoing Mormon need to have their cake and eat it too. You want to tell everyone why your church is better because of modern prophets, but you don't want anyone to think you're different. It's something I've observed for a long time. Mormons see themselves as the same as mainstream Christians, and they can't for the life of them figure out why mainstream Christians don't see it the same way. But you are different. Embrace it instead of trying to present one face to the world and another to yourselves. (Hinckley was especially guilty of this, minimizing essential LDS doctrines in public then turning around and winking at members not to worry about it.)

I don't see it that way. We are VERY different in many ways, but we also celebrate and point out the things we have in common. It's not a problem to do both.

I thought it was a little, well no.... very bizarre. But to be fair, the Bible would seem strange to anyone completely unfamiliar with it too I suppose.

Too late for me I already belong to the churches of Barnes and Noble and Borders, which can also be used at any Walden Books which is the same church without the dvd's.

    No need.

My fundie Uncle (whom I love dearly) slipped a pocket sized version into our luggage the last time we visited home.

As a-religious as I am, I still couldn't find it in myself to toss the thing in the trash.

It IS still classic literature, after all. ;p

    Read Ruth.

Seriously. Awesome book, that, even if taken as a work of pure fiction.
