I can certainly see how any rat-phobic viewers would be turned off by the hordes of running rats. I'm okay with it, but if Pixar ever does "Spiders," good-bye. Even worse, the germophobes will have a fit. I'm not one of them, either, so I thought the rats all over the kitchen were funny. Especially going through the dishwasher. Loved the scene in which Linguini was sleep "walking". Very, very well done. I liked Anton Ego's look, like an undertaker. He was cool and had some good dialogue. Most of the humans were pretty well designed, except that chef with the thumb. Looked like someone had smashed in his face. But overall, better character disign than Incredibles. I was very disturbed to see a character designated as illegitimate. Ick, what's next? Unmarrieds living together? And I'm not even thinking about kids (don't have any). I just don't want to go there. (Though Linguini said he doesn't drink--good boy) If the goal is to make a CGI film indistinguishable from live-action, Pixar's on the right track. They'll achieve it, if they stay away from human characters. Using just the rats and the backgrounds, Ratatouille could've been there. I don't personally think that's a good thing, but the Pixar folks are very near the peak of hyper-realism, and may top the summit with that robot movie. The "Lifted" short was pretty good, too. The victim looked so much like Linguini. In the day of DNA testing, Anton still uses a vintage typewriter? Get in the 21st century, dude. The part that really stays with me is the ending. I couldn't imagine how they were going to escape the wrath of the health inspector. They didn't. So, instead of becoming a rich, famous master chef (a distinction he didn't deserve), Linguini gets a good job as a maitre d'; less money, but he enjoys it. Bravo! Anton's final review was touching in its feel of genuineness. It didn't seem forced or scripted, just sincere. After the film, my nephew declared he wants to be a chef. The above is all just MHO. The charactures of people and rats and stylized look (along with the backgrounds) made it look convincingly real yet imaginative enough that you can still believe that a rat can cook. Very well done, IMO.

I didn't like the rats-as-thieves sub-plot, if that's the right word for it. It seemed to distract from the point of the story: rats as chefs. I couldn't seem to care if a rat taking food counts as stealing or not. I think the movie would've been improved if they stuck with to cook or not to cook; safety vs art.
Originally Posted By FerretAfros "Unless I missed it, there were no bathroom or flatulence jokes." There is the "rat patootie" part, but that isn't really that bad. Other than that, I can't think of anything. Amazing that there are in fact people out there who can make an enjoyable (and at times quite funny) movie without resorting to bathroom humor.

The backgrounds are exquisite. The story also worked on many different levels and I feel it is the most satisfying film for adults that Pixar has done. I loved it... if it is not my favorite Pixar film, it is at least in second place (I really, really, really love Monsters Inc). On the other hand, outside of the slapstick I don't see much in the film to amuse the kids. I doubt many 6 year olds know anything about losing stars, or restaurant critics, or inheritances or wormy little bosses. It also lacked the "warm fuzzy" ending that most (all?) previous Pixar films have had. My wife and daughter are big fans of warm fuzzies, and when I asked them how they liked the movie I got "It was OK" and "It was all right". So my guess is that even though it is a resounding critical success; it may not do as well at the box office as many other Pixar films have done. As far as I'm concerned, who cares? How many films have won best picture while grossing less than $200,000? Quite a few!! And as far as I'm concerned, Ratatouille is worthy of a best picture nod. Not best animated film. Best picture. Period.
