But, I don't mind the use of the carrot for that first foray.

Originally Posted By Ursula <Ursula, that is a good idea but Disney already does an awful lot for charity.> Yes, I know. I am a VoluntEar myself. Anyone wish to sponsor me in the CHOC Walk??? I should also say that most of my opinions on this stem from what I saw at the D23 event. They had various things people could do in exchange for Mouse Ear hats. I did my part, cutting and tying knots into blankets for kids. I spent about 20-30 minutes doing it. I know people had a lot to do and see that day and several people did cut a few strips and tie a few knots and then leave. But, I lost count on how many people came up, touched a blanket (i.e. NOT do a thing) and then go and collect their Ear hat. It was disgusting and sad.

Many charities require background checks for volunteers, how will that be handled. I think it is an interesting promotion. Though I am really promotioned out. It will also be interesting to see how Disney plasters this throughout the parks.

And just because they are advertising that they are trying to help the Amazon doesn't mean its a bad thing that they are doing it, they just happen to not be as noble about it as making an anonymous donation. Anyway, I think this promotional idea is good, it gives a nice reward to persons who already volunteer and will get new people involved in it, and yes some will be doing it for selfish reasons, but others may find it to be something they genuinely enjoy and will keep doing.

So many people will be taking time out of their lives to help others, and that's bad because???? It's like Disney can't ever do anything right for people on this site.

Through it, more people will volunteer (Is it REALLY volunteering if there is a payoff at the end?), and hopefully they'll learn the good that comes of the process, and continue. Also, I'm hoping more people volunteer with the organizations I'm associated with. I wouldn't be associated with them if they weren't worthy causes, but it has been SO hard to find new volunteers over the years. We'll take all the help we can get!

Well, I'm sure they could have reached their million volenteers simply by putting it on their WDW and DLR websites and in their Disney Parks national TV and print media ads without calling all the news stations and having me down there doing live shots for the evening news.

This is a good situation, because as times get tough, the first things people stop doing is donating to charity.... So if Disney is able to only get 10% of the people volunteering to actually work hard for the charity or organization, and then only 10% of them enjoy it so much they go back, that is still a plethora of new volunteers and that is not a bad thing no matter how much people want to be upset about this...
Originally Posted By SpokkerJones "So many people will be taking time out of their lives to help others, and that's bad because???? They certainly did a good job on the Sleeping Beauty walkthrough reopening in my opinion. I just hate it when a for-profit company pretends it's doing something nice when they are really in it for the profit. Basically, Disney thinks it will make more money doing this promotion than without. It's simply a modification of giving away free tickets all the while hoping they will spend money in the park in order to help fend off the recession. I would like to see them do this promotion during the next economic boom. They won't, because they won't have to give away free tickets to attract people to the parks. It's not real charity. Why doesn't Disney just give money to charity? Why don't they just beef up their Voluntears program if they are feeling so charitable? They won't. They want you to do it, and in return they'll give you a ticket with a real value way less than whatever price they are asking for it these days. Want to be charitable and feel good about it? Volunteer for a non-profit and *don't* take participate in this promotion. That's what I intend to do.

Whether it is to feel "good" about themselves, or because it will look good on their resume... or because it will "enhance" their chances to get into heaven. You are fooling yourself if you think there are people out there who volunteer out of the good of their own heart expecting nothing back in return...
