I like Nancy Pelosi's comment, that she's never seen a party run against an entire geographical region of the country, as they keep talking about the "SF Homosexual Agenda."

As she states, what do Republicans (both of them) in San Francisco have to think about the party basically trashing an entire American city? It's the fifth or sixth largest city region in the country, if you count the surrounding area.

Fear mongering and the politics of division - "us vs. them" coming from the republicans. What a surprise. It's not like this is something new from them. They trot out this ugly horse every election.

Kind of like crying racism all the time in order to secure the minority vote, right?

That's true. Because the 1984 Dem. convention was in San Francisco, Reagan referred to the '84 ticket as "San Francisco Democrats." And everyone knew what THAT was code for.

What's interesting about this Ford ad is that people under about 35, including Tennesseeans, when asked about it, don't see it as racial at all - the idea of a black man dating a white woman just doesn't seem alien to them. But Tenneseans 45 and older, republicans and democrats both, DO see it as racial, and understand what it's appealing to. It's hopeful in a way - the crudest forms of racism seem to be slowly seeping away. But it's not yet gone.

The point as I understood it was that Ford is (supposedly) a swinging single type. Which is no big deal to me, but to some voters, it might be. It's still a silly point to base an ad on, but there was no bigotry in this ad whatsoever. And how stupid would someone have to be to think that anyone could get away with REAL racism in an ad these days?

It's also funny that nobody from the democratic side is protesting ads against the other black candidate, Steele, in another state's election. But, oh - that's right - he's running as a republican - so he can't really be black, can he?

To me, any people who interpret that specific image in the anti-Ford ad as racist strike me as being racist themselves.

Well, the thing is, to voters over a certain age in Tennessee, there IS racism in this ad, and that's why it was designed this way. You can't get away with blatant racism these days, but you can (try to) get away with this sort of subtle appeal to older people who still shudder at the thought of a black man "ravaging our women." I have southern roots and trust me, this attitude still exists in older people. And that's who that segment of the ad was aimed at.

And is that attitude (ravaging our women) even true when the woman in the ad is portrayed as a sort of tramp? Because, unless I am wrong, that'a another older generation thing - that tramps deserve what happens to them. And the woman in the ad is certainly not portrayed as anyone for whom an older generation southerner would show sympathy or support. More to the point would be to show Ford seducing a normal housewife type - a southern belle, if you will.

Among the older southerners I know, yes, racism tends to trump sexism.

Based on what I hear here, it is based on racism, and prudism.

All the things that people in the south are stereotyped about. They should feel proud that this is the sort of thing that people who are very cynical and in power think of them.

ECDC, now that your comment is five years old, do you still this this represented "a new low"?

Seems downright quaint at this point lol.
