Obama is operating under the idea that we can be truly bipartisan in this country. I don't think it's really possible anymore. Certainly not right now. Look at the rhetoric against him. And this is when he is trying to appease these folks! He isn't going to win over a certain chunk of the population, no matter what. So, he needs to focus for awhile on those of us who did vote for him. Let the tinfoil hat crowd bay at the moon. They will no matter what as long as a Democrat is in the white house.
