If there were no metal detectors present I have no idea what might be going through those gates. I don't have an issue if Disney put in metal detectors. As long as they disguised them well. I agree that Security at WDW is a joke and for PR purposes only. Some of these "police" don't even look like they are in any condition to chase down a run away stroller let alone a pick pocket or purse snacher.

As for Disney, the sucurity checks are a waste of time as they are right now. Do it well or don't do it at all. Plus the notion that "they are needed" at Disney is a conditioned state of mind and the fear that we have been fed by this administration.

This isn't worth it. Sure it's PR security that only reminds people with brains (lik myself) how unsafe we always are with crazy people in the world. But if it makes some feeble-minded souls feel safer, than I don't have a problem with it. Well, I do ... but they are here to stay, so why waste the energy?

Is that the spirit of the year, or are you just a pale shadow of your former self? Wait, what am I saying? Of course you're a pale shadow, and getting paler with each passing year that brings you yet further from 1974. Nice to have you back here, buddy!

The Spirit doesn't feel 1974 was particularly important except for it being the first time he beheld the wonders of Walt Disney World ... back when the magic was so real ... so tangible you felt you could devour it like a hot fudge sundae ...mmmmmmm

Regardless of what the movies would have you believe, to do real damage to something you need a fair volume of material to do it with. Not just what you can sneak in down a pants leg, or inside a drink cup. Large volumes being required is also the reason why there are the present-everywhere steel gateway posts. They are intended to keep someone from simply driving a load of bad news right into a park.

They are completely surrounded by public roadways. The backside of many attractions and backstage entrances are within yards of public roads. DLR has addressed this in many ways. Most of them are quite discrete, but present nonetheless. The front-gate baggage check is just the most visible component that guests see.

There's no way you could just crash a car or truck through a barrier and get into the park, backstage, or the esplanade. They've definately though this through and did some remodeling. In typical Disney fashion, they make most of it very discreet looking so it doesn't look like you're in a war zone, but the protections are there.

I'm just saying, for a once-in-a-while visitor, these checks probably make them feel better. If no checks were being made, I just bet Guest Relations would be asked over and over, why there are no security checks. I can hear people saying, "This is dangerous, no one checked anything and anyone can bring anything in here!" (<--in very loud complaining voices) My point is, WDW has to do it. They have to do something. And, personally, I feel most people do not mind. I might be wrong. Also, I completely understand where you are coming from and I agree about the situation at the airports. While some are cruising through with scissors and other possible hidden dangers, I was stripsearched, STRIP-searched at Reagan National in DC last year. I mean, me. My husband and 26 yr old daughter sat and waited while I was taken into this room and stripped! Oh yeah. Now, if you knew me, you would laugh as my family did. I am probably the last person in the world you would pick out to be strip searched. I had very mixed emotions about it. And I didn't like the attitude once I was taken in that room. I was trying to be friendly, but they would not let me speak and would not let me touch anything. Interesting eye-opener for me. While I am in complete agreement to search anything and anyone, I never expected it to be me!!!! LOL Anyway, I understand your feelings especially being in the airline industry.
