Now this is a "plus" I can get behind!

I most certainly buy it in the case of IASW, which was intended as a cohesive presentation with a specific message, designed in a very specific style by a highly regarded artist. Sticking Stitch in there screws that up.

But Mansion and Pirates are a series of loosely connected vignettes, quite suited to changes and plussing, especially as technology evolves.

The mirror thing looks to me like a very DISNEY sort of plus.

BTW, I wouldn't exactly call the characters in IASW and POTC "irrevocable" ...

Al Lutz blogged two or three years ago that some interactive HHG mirror effects were being considered for DL's Mansion. Even though WDW got it first, I'm hopeful the effects will "materialize" here, too.

I was just at WDW a couple of weeks ago, so JUST missed getting to see this and the new interactive queue stuff. We did see the interim projections in the mirror hallway. That was fun, but, I would rather have seen this in person!

Now I'm going to feel cheated riding the DL version.

If you're against these, I'm not sure what to say to you. And it's probably best to keep my mouth shut anyway.

Especially given that this attraction will be showing these projections for years to come, I don't think that these effects will age all that well.

However, if there was some way to use a combination of AAs and the new effects, I think that this could really work. I don't mind the concept itself for these effects, but I'm not sure that the execution of them is the best for the long-term solution that the attraction needs.

It will also be interesting to see how the technology holds up. It looks like it worked fine during several visits in the video, but projectors seem to lack some of the reliability of a ghost-on-a-stick.

You don't think it'll hold up better than 40 year old mannequins?

    Change is good

Except for that small voice that forewarns me I will miss that creepy feeling of having a ghost by my side just accompanying me home without performing any tricks.

Of course all of us here are such fans of bird-on-a-stick. :)

Not really. While the old mannequins are old, they still fit the overall look and texture of the attraction. This introduces something new right at the very end, as sort of a disjointed experience. The talking bride also has this same problem, so maybe this will help her fit in a little better.

But CGI just rarely ages well. For example, look at It's Tough to Be a Bug in DCA and DAK. It uses a CGI film and some AAs of characters from the feature. 13 years after the attraction opened in DAK (the features in the DCA version are identical for this discussion), the film just looks really out of date. The AAs, created at the same time for similar characters to the ones onscreen, still look fine.

Of course, this isn't to say that Disney won't ever upgrade the looks of the CGI ghosts in coming years, as computer capabilities continue to grow. However, given what we've seen from them so far (especially with technology that's 'easily updated' like projections and simulators), I'm not holding my breath. At this moment in time, the CGI may look great. 5 years from now, who knows what it will look like. In 10-15, it will look pretty bad. That's just the lifecycle of CGI. Just look at the original Toy Story, and compare it with TS3; the rendering capabilities in the original are downright distracting at times. The effects themselves work for me, but I really worry about their presentation in years to come.

Say what you will about it, but how reliable is the bird-on-a-stick, when compared with using the latest-and-greatest technology for a nifty effect? : )

I think I get what you're saying, but it's an argument that is a bit over-analytical and weak to me. What they've done is certainly not nearly as out of sync with the attraction as Haunted Mansion Holiday (which I hate) and people seem to love that. As for reliability, well what do you really know about this effect and its reliability?

I'm willing to bet my shirt that when they do there will be skeptical fans complaining about any changes.

For every new cgi effect Disney can justify building another Hotel on property. From the looks of the POP Century addition alone; there will be massive amounts of new peoples. It is huge!
