If you would care to create one (and perhaps use this comment as a synopsis for discussion?), I'd be VERY interested in hearing what folks have to say on the matter. I have no idea how extreme these "interim" situations are, but it obviously varies from state to state (see the Blagojevich example as to why it probably should NOT be a gubernatorial appointment!), and you are spot on William in pointing out that it bit the Democrats of Massachusetts in the ass in the end (only they put it off for a few years, and it was the wrong Senator in question!). Talk about karma...this sure does feel that way! BUT, enough about that unless you feel like creating a topic on it...one which I'm VERY interested in participating in if you feel like it.

I've never really spent a lot of time there, so I guess I wouldn't know, but being such a tiny state you've got Boston and Connecticut at your disposal as well so it can't be all that bad. Unless you're just not a New England kinda guy. Are you not a New England kinda guy, Sport Goofy?

It's a very odd culture, too. You have all of these Roman Catholic families with 10 kids and none of them ever move out of the state or any farther than about a mile from the family home. If you even suggest that there are places to go outside of RI, you get this strange glare like you have completely lost your mind. And, yeah, I'm not a New England kinda guy. I do cheer for the Patriots, though (as long as Randy Moss is there).

Interesting about the Catholic stuff...although my step-Mom is Italian Catholic, lives today less than a mile from where she grew up, and way back when when my Dad got a job 2 hours away in N.H. and they moved up there, you'd think from talking to her than he'd dragged her to, well, Japan. So I know the type pretty well.
