Now that I think about it, you probably can't get one on a plane (not in coach anyway lol).

Bloody mary is an option, but if you don't like them I can't really think of anything "light". Some people drink Screwdrivers in the am (vodka and o.j.), or maybe just a glass of wine (do they serve that in coach?).

So, a nice glass of white wine might work.

I imagine they might offer a mimosa with some sort of cheap sparkling wine, but I doubt if you could get a champagne version though.

They do serve it in the little bottles, which is convenient since you can add as much (or as little) as you like.

Also, if you ask nicely, they could probably give you another glass of juice later at no charge, so if you have any leftover vodka that is an idea.

Yikes, airport bars? I wouldn't go that far. :p

I don't think they're open early anyway though.

If you're thinking "I gotta drink before I get on that plane!", perhaps a better solution would be to see your doc, explain the situation, and ask for a mild anti-anxiety medication you could take in the am before your flight.

Bars in airports are different in that no one bats an eye for people drinking at 8am.

That's why I go there all the time.

Seriously, be careful not to drink too much, or you may pull a Finnerman.

Finnerman is the Connecticut investment banker who made airline history in 1995. He was catapulted right up there in the flight history books with pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart when, mid-flight, he took off his clothes, jumped up onto a United Airlines food service cart, and committed an unspeakable act.

Fear of flying is one of the most acknowledged fears we have. It is logical, of course, because we all know that anything that heavy cannot possibly get airborne.

For many years I was sure that the only reason the plane stayed in the air was because I was pulling up on the armrests hard enough to make it stay suspended in the sky. Later, after riding one of those planes about the size of a football field, I was convinced that they really don't fly. They follow the interstates and just project movies of being at a high elevation on the windows so you think you're flying.

Seriously, it is a very real anxiety and one that isn't easily pushed aside. I just used to tell myself how many flights there were per day and how many of those flights had any real problems. The answer almost always was; literally 10's of thousands of flights per day and almost always no reportable problems. Those are better odds than crossing the street. I have taken many flights over the last 40 years and I cannot say that the anxiety has completely gone away, but, it is no longer the focal point of the event. Try to relax and look at some of the spectacular scenery that just is not available from the ground.

I've looked for bars open in the mornings at airports (sue me), but I've found that alot of them aren't open. Perhaps I've travelled through the wrong airports? :p

I can appreciate your sentiment. In fact, it is based on pure logic.

Heck, I could be sitting here and a meteor could crash through my roof and kill me dead right now.

    Unlikely, but possible.

I think it's hard to quote stats to a fearful flyer though. The condition is, at its root, irrational.

If it were rational, we should all get extremely nervous everytime we turn the ignition key on our cars, since death is FAR more likely every time we do that, compared to sitting on an airplane.

I think the flying this is a mix of fears...the whole "we shouldn't be sitting here 48,000 feet above the earth!", and the claustrophobia thing for some, and just the "I'm totally not in control of this situation!" thing, etc, etc...

Logic is great. It doesn't help the anxiety though (I sure wish it did!).

Of course. BUT, quoting the odds doesn't help. For me, it's more of the "well, IF I'm unlucky enough to be on the unusual "doomed flight", that would suck".

***Try to relax and look at some of the spectacular scenery that just is not available from the ground.***

This is very true. I try to enjoy that stuff...I've seen Mount Fuji from the air, the New York Skyline from many angles both night and day, and I've seen what Siberia looks like (it looks cold lol). That's an amazing chance and it is something that only the very most recent generations have had the PRIVILEGE to enjoy! I do love flying! (and i hate it at the same time...weird, eh?)

It's a FREE self help course taught by an airline pilot, based out of SFO. After going through the course and reading his book, I'm no longer terrified of flying. The course was wonderful! And even includes a mock flight at the end of the course.

I really hope this helps you! It really helped me and I thought I'd never get over my terrible fear of flying. I literally used to stand in line at the airport, shaking like a leaf and pouring sweat, and my heart used to feel like it wa trying to come out of me chest.

Now flying is really an enjoyable experience.

    Good luck and God Bless.

Actually, that is how it works. But enough people have to do it together in unison, or the plane augers in.
