"Scooter Libby did not deserve to go to prison and I'm glad the president had the courage to do this." << Someone needs to ask ambassador carlson WHY libby doesn't deserve to go to prison. Because he's an anglo upper class male? "White Justice"? Or someone could ask bush WHY libby's sentence was "excessive". The jury and judge didn't seem to think so. But the president apparently disagrees. So tell us why. Or someone can explain why this isn't corruption. We have a ranking member of bush's own administration, duly tried and convicted, and the president steps in to say he knows better. He doesn't say that there were any improprieties about the trial or the verdict, he doesn't insinuate that libby isn't actually guilty - just that he shouldn't have to go to jail - because he says so. And we're supposed to sit still and accept that.

They are forced to impose sentences within a narrow range based on a complex formula. They are not allowed to deviate from the "recommended" range based on the facts of the individual case. Personally, I think this is a very unjust system, and that Libby received a sentence much higher than the totality of his situation warranted. But that's no different than any number of other federal convicts. Congress should change the law so that judges have discretion over these matters.

Any politician with any hope of getting elected will have to distance themselves from this travesty of justice. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. This Administration could indeed make Nixon's look snow white.
